What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a common drug used in cancer treatments. It is typically used to treat “hormone sensitive” cancers, which include breast cancer, womb cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.

How does it work?

Hormone therapy works by blocking the hormones that are causing the cancer to develop and grow. There are various different types of hormone therapy treatments and drugs available. The type of treatment prescribed will typically depend on both the type and stage of cancer the patient is suffering from.

What are the benefits of hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy can effectively treat certain types of cancer.

Are there any side effects?

There are some side effects associated with hormone therapy. Your Consultant will go through each of these with you and provide you with advice on how best to cope with them.

Potential side effects can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Migraines
  • Difficulty with short term memory
  • Bowel problems

Will hormone therapy be part of my cancer treatment plan?

Hormone therapy is often used in combination with other cancer treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Whether it will be part of your cancer care treatment will depend upon the type and stage of your cancer. Your Consultant will discuss with you in detail your treatment options.

Paying for your treatment

You have two options to pay for your treatment – your costs may be covered by your private medical insurance, or you can pay for yourself. If you are paying for your own treatment the cost of the procedure will be explained and confirmed in writing when you book the operation. Ask the hospital for a quote beforehand, and ensure that this includes the consultants’ fees and the hospital charge for your procedure.
