Urology is the branch of medicine involved with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract system as well as conditions of the male reproductive system, particularly the prostate.

Your prostate is a small gland that produces a fluid which is used to create semen. Sometimes things can go wrong and cause a variety of problems with your prostate. For example, your prostate can become enlarged (prostate enlargement) or swollen due to inflammation (prostatitis), which can put pressure on your bladder and urethra, leading to issues with urinating.

Problems with your bladder can also affect your ability to urinate. For example, a urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder stones may cause painful urination and blood in your urine. Our specialist urologists at Thornbury Hospital are here to support you and provide you with an expert diagnosis and a fully tailored treatment plan to help you get your life back on track.

Along with fast diagnosis, our urology team have access to state-of-the-art services such as Rezum as well as a multitude of diagnostic imaging services housed in our specialist Scanning Centre. Speak to our friendly team today or book online to arrange your appointment with one of our highly experienced urology consultants.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is important to see a medical specialist to find out the cause:

  • Blood in your urine
  • Painful urination
  • Changes in frequency of urination
  • Inability to urinate
  • Weak or hesitant stream of urine
  • Leaking of urine (incontinence)
  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Testicular mass

Some of the most common urology conditions we manage at Thornbury Hospital include:

  • Incontinence: Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary release of urine. It ranges from mild to severe, and there are several types of urinary incontinence including stress, urge, and overflow. It can be caused by multiple factors, such as stress, age, and underlying medical conditions
  • Urinary tract infections: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections usually caused by faecal bacteria entering your urinary tract. You may feel a burning sensation whilst urinating and might feel an increased, urgent need to urinate
  • Kidney stones: Kidney stones are stones formed by minerals and salts found in your body. Usually, kidney stones can pass on their own if they are small, but if they are larger or more complex, they can cause blockages in your ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder) which causes a lot of pain
  • Painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis): Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that affects the bladder and surrounding pelvic area. It causes pain and discomfort in these areas, as well as an increased urinary urgency and frequency. You may have also heard of it as ‘painful bladder syndrome'
  • Benign scrotal lumps: Most of the time, lumps in your testicles are caused by something non-cancerous (benign). The two most common types of benign lumps in testicles are hydroceles and epidydimal cysts. If you do feel a lump or cyst in your testicle, it is vital that you have it examined by a medical specialist to rule out anything serious

  • Cystoscopy (flexible): A flexible cystoscopy is a quick, routine procedure which involves a thin tube with a light and camera at one end of it called a cystoscope. This is carried out in order to examine your bladder, and involves a cystoscope being inserted into your urethra (the tube that carries urine out of your body) upwards into your bladder. The images captured by the cystoscope are displayed on a monitor for your consultant to view whilst performing the procedure. A flexible cystoscopy is usually performed to aid diagnosis and treatment of bladder stones, frequent UTIs, and pelvic floor dysfunction. A flexible cystoscopy typically takes around 5 minutes
  • Trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP): A trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a procedure which involves removing part of your prostate. You may consider TURP if you are suffering with an enlarged or swollen prostate, as it can help relieve the symptoms by reducing the pressure placed on your bladder and urethra
  • Rigid cystoscopy (bladder scope): A rigid cystoscopy (bladder scope) is similar to a flexible cystoscopy, but it involves the insertion of a rigid cystoscope into your urethra and bladder. This allows your consultant to view and examine these areas closely and is usually performed under local or general anaesthetic. A rigid cystoscopy typically takes around 15-30 minutes
  • Rezum: Rezum is a minimally invasive treatment which can shrink an enlarged prostate using steam. It is an outpatient procedure and typically takes around 10-15 minutes. If you are suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) then Rezum treatment can be performed on you to help reduce your symptoms
  • Adult circumcision: Adult circumcision is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the foreskin from your penis. It can be performed for numerous reasons; religious, cultural, cosmetic, or medical and is typically performed in infancy or early childhood but it can also be performed on adults
