At Thornbury Hospital, we offer a wide range of spinal surgeries, including:
Spinal fusion surgery
Spinal fusion surgery is used to treat severe and debilitating pain in your lumbar (lower) spine. It involves fusing together two or more of your vertebrae (the bones that form your spinal cord) using a bone graft.
Lumbar spinal decompression surgery starting from £10,991*
Lumbar spinal decompression is often performed to treat compressed nerves from spinal stenosis. Your Orthopaedic Surgeon will usually ask you to lie down on your stomach to allow an incision to be made into the middle of your lower back. The muscles in your back are raised to expose your spine and surgical instruments are used to remove any tissue (bone or ligaments) at the back of your spine that could be compressing your nerves.
Lumbar laminectomy starting from £10,991*
This is a type of spinal decompression surgery. During a lumbar laminectomy, your Orthopaedic Surgeon will create a vertical incision across the middle of your lower back. Your back muscles are then lifted to gain access to your spine and the part of your ligament or bone that is putting pressure on your spinal nerves is removed.
Lumbar microdiscectomy £8,305*
A lumbar microdiscectomy can be performed to remove pressure on your spinal nerves from a slipped disc (also known as a prolapsed or herniated disc). This can lead to pain in your lower back and neck, or pain in your buttocks, hips and legs, if the affected disc puts pressure on your sciatic nerve (a nerve that travels across your lower back to your feet).
If you are advised to have a lumbar discectomy, the damaged part of your slipped disc that is putting pressure on your nerves is removed with an operating microscope.
