One common cause of compressed spinal nerves is spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the space around your spinal cord. Another is a slipped disc. Between each of your vertebrae (spinal bones) sits a disc, and if the coating of that disc becomes torn it can ‘slip’ and push against the surrounding nerves. You might also have pressure on your spinal nerves as a result of a spinal injury such as a fracture.
At your initial consultation for back or leg pain, you will be seen by an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Thornbury Hospital. Your Orthopaedic Surgeon will work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including Spinal Surgeons and Radiologists to investigate and diagnose your symptoms.
Once diagnosis has been confirmed, your Consultant might suggest treatment such as physiotherapy to improve movement in your legs, or spinal injection therapy (a course of injections) to relieve any swelling or pain. But if these treatment options do not improve your symptoms, your Consultant may feel that the best recommendation is surgery.
A lumbar microdiscectomy can be performed to remove pressure on your spinal nerves from a slipped disc (also known as a prolapsed or herniated disc). This can lead to pain in your lower back and neck, or pain in your buttocks, hips and legs, if the affected disc puts pressure on your sciatic nerve (a nerve that travels across your lower back to your feet).
If you are advised to have a lumbar discectomy, the damaged part of your slipped disc that is putting pressure on your nerves is removed with an operating microscope.
