The study and treatment of the skin, hair and nails is known as dermatology. A doctor who specialises in this area is known as a dermatologist.

Skin diseases or conditions can often have a significant impact on physical, mental and emotional health. The skin, especially on the face, is so visible that a problem can easily end up making you feel quite self-conscious or embarrassed.

If you’re worrying about a problem with your skin, you’ll want to learn what’s causing it and how it can best be treated.

Since The Saxon Clinic first opened more than 30 years ago, we’ve helped countless private patients in and around Milton Keynes, Buckingham, Leighton Buzzard and Woburn who were suffering with various skin problems. We would love to help you now too.

Many things can cause a problem with the skin, including:

  • irritants and allergens,
  • disease,
  • genetic factors,
  • stress.

Some of the more common reasons people come to see us for help include:

  • A mole that has changed colour or shape or suddenly appeared,
  • A spot that just won't heal up,
  • A rash that is itchy or unsightly.

Our dermatology team can help with a wide range of skin conditions. Below are some of the ones they seem most frequently:

  • Acne: causes spots and oily skin, often on the face and neck.
  • Contact dermatitis: if the skin comes into contact with certain substances, it may become itchy, cracked or blistered.
  • Eczema: used to describe a group of conditions that cause dry and irritated skin.
  • Psoriasis: causes patches of skin that are red, dry and scaly.
  • Rosacea: causes sporadic blushing around the face and neck.
  • Hives: also known as urticaria this is a raised, itchy rash on the skin.

In addition, they can help with:

  • skin cancer,
  • hair and scalp disorders,
  • inflammatory skin diseases,
  • skin allergies,
  • general skin ‘lumps and bumps’,
  • mole checks.

Whatever skin problem you have, our dermatology team will provide you with expert assessment and diagnosis. Should treatment be necessary, they’ll be able to arrange that for you simply and quickly.

With any medical problem, an accurate diagnosis is crucial. Once a diagnosis has been made, treatment options can be discussed, planned and started.

When you first meet with your doctor here at The Saxon Clinic, they’ll talk with you about your symptoms. They’ll want to know things like:

  • How long you’ve had the problem,
  • Whether you’ve had any other symptoms (like pain for example),
  • Whether it’s been getting worse over time,
  • Any ways you’ve tried to treat it already.

There are a range of diagnostic tests that can be helpful when investigating skin problems. Visual examination is key, and any additional diagnostic tests needed can be easily arranged for you.

These may include:

  • Allergy testing: certain allergies may trigger skin complaints. Allergy testing helps determine what substances trigger the allergic reaction.
  • Mole Mapping: used to help screen for suspected skin cancer. The number and positions of moles on the body is recorded (mapped) and any changes compared over time.
  • Biopsy: a sample of the affected skin is surgically removed and sent for analysis. This is useful for assessing the presence (and type) of skin cancer.

For more than 30 years, we’ve been helping support and treat people with skin problems. People choose to come from us for a number of reasons, including:

  • Rapid access: When you’re struggling with a disease or condition affecting your skin, you’ll want to get it diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. With quick access to skin experts, we’ll be able to assess, diagnose and treat you without undue delay.
