Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialist surgical field for diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and problems of the teeth, mouth, face, jaw and neck.

There are a variety of reasons people visit a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon here at The Saxon Clinic, including:

  • Adult Oral Surgery
  • Head and neck skin cancer surgery
  • Surgical removal of wisdom teeth, buried roots and other impacted teeth
  • Surgical exposure or removal of buried canine teeth
  • Treatment of cysts and tumours of the face, mouth and  jaws
  • Screening for Oral Cancer
  • Biopsy and treatment of lesions of the lip, mouth, roof of mouth (palate) and tongue

  • Treatment of salivary gland problems, including  lumps, stones and mucous cysts
  • Treatment of facial injuries, including fractures of the jaw and cheek bone (zygoma)
  • Management of disorders of the jaw (temporomandibular joint)
  • Investigation and treatment of facial pain
  • Surgery to correct dental and facial deformities (orthognathic discrepancies)
  • Facial skin surgery,
  • Bone grafting.

Due to the complex nature of many of the procedures carried out, most people will be referred to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from a GP, dentist, orthodontist or a consultant in another speciality.

When you first meet with your doctor here at The Saxon Clinic, they will take a medical history and ask you about your symptoms. They will usually want to know:

  • What symptoms you have
  • When these symptoms first appeared
  • Whether you have any pain
  • What effect your symptoms are having on daily life
  • Whether you have any particular concerns about your symptoms (for example, are you worried you may have oral cancer?)

They will carry out a clinical examination of the affected area(s).

Further investigations are often needed for many oral and maxillofacial problems. These may be a dental X-ray, CT, a TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) arthroscopy or a biopsy (removal of a tiny sample of tissue which is sent for examination under a microscope).

Your clinical history, physical examination and the results from any additional investigations will be used to make a diagnosis. Your Consultant will then plan the best treatment pathway for you. For more complex cases, they may discuss treatment options within a multidisciplinary team meeting, with specialists in other fields like orthodontists, dermatologists or ENT surgeons.

From your initial assessment and diagnosis through to treatment and recovery, you will be supported every step of the way by our experienced team. Your Consultant will explain any treatment plan with you.

Any type of surgery involves risks and potential complications. Your Consultant will discuss these with you so that you can make an informed choice about treatment.

If you have any questions or concerns, they will be very happy to talk about these with you.

Many people are referred to us for Oral and Maxillofacial surgery from their GP, dentist, orthodontist or another healthcare professional.

We treat people with private medical insurance and self-pay patients.

While most of our patients are from Milton Keynes or the surrounding areas, others choose to travel from further afield to visit with us.
