The Ridgeway Hospital offers Arthrosamid® Injections for knee pain in Swindon and the wider area.

Arthrosamid® is an innovative treatment designed for people with knee osteoarthritis. It involves a single injection into the knee joint, guided by ultrasound for accuracy. The injection contains a synthetic hydrogel that cushions the joint, helping to reduce pain and restore movement.

This page explains what Arthrosamid® does, how it works, and what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Arthrosamid® is specifically approved for knee osteoarthritis. This condition occurs when the cartilage protecting your joints wears away, causing bones to rub together. This leads to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced flexibility.

Although osteoarthritis can affect hips, hands, and other joints, Arthrosamid® is currently only used for knees.

Arthrosamid® is an intra-articular injection, meaning it is given directly into your knee joint. It contains a non-biodegradable hydrogel that thickens the lubricating fluid, known as synovial fluid, and integrates with the tissue in your knee joint. This lubricates and cushions your knee joint which helps to relieve knee pain and improve your mobility. The synthetic hydrogel is not broken down by your body which allows it to stay in your knee joint, relieving symptoms for longer than other similar treatments.

The mode of action is actually the Arthrosamid improving Synovial tissue elasticity which subsequently improves pain.

  • Noticeable pain relief and improved mobility within weeks
  • Minimally invasive with a short recovery period
  • Long-lasting results, with one injection lasting up to five years
  • Low risk of complications or side effects
  • May help delay knee replacement surgery

This treatment is often recommended for people with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who haven’t responded to lifestyle changes, medication, or physiotherapy. It can also be a good option for younger patients who want to postpone surgery or avoid lengthy recovery times.

Arthrosamid® may not be suitable if you:
  • Have haemophilia or other clotting disorders
  • Take anticoagulant medication
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an infection in or around the knee
  • Had knee arthroscopy within the last six months
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes
  • Are undergoing major dental work
  • Have autoimmune conditions such as MS, Addison’s disease, or coeliac disease

Always tell your consultant about any health conditions, allergies, or medications before treatment.

If Arthrosamid® isn’t right for you, other options include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Exercise and weight management
  • Medication: NSAIDs for pain and inflammation
  • Physiotherapy: Strengthening and mobility exercises
  • Shockwave therapy: Non-invasive sound wave treatment
  • Steroid injections: Reduce inflammation for weeks or months
  • Hyaluronic acid injections: Lubricate the joint for short-term relief
  • PRP injections: Use your own platelets to aid healing
  • APS therapy: Injecting proteins to reduce inflammation
  • Knee replacement surgery: Usually considered when other treatments fail

Your consultant will provide detailed instructions, which will also be included in your appointment letter. Contact the hospital if you have any questions.

You may be asked to stop certain medications, such as blood thinners, for a few days before your injection to reduce bleeding risk.

On arrival, a member of staff will explain the process and answer any questions. You’ll sign a consent form confirming you understand the procedure and its risks.

You may receive antibiotics through a vein to help prevent infection.

The injection itself takes about 15 minutes.

During the procedure:

  • You’ll be positioned comfortably
  • The injection site will be cleaned
  • A local anaesthetic will be given to numb the area
  • Using ultrasound guidance, your consultant will inject Arthrosamid® into the knee joint
  • The needle will be removed and a plaster applied

Recovery and aftercare

You can go home shortly after the procedure. Mild discomfort or swelling is common once the anaesthetic wears off, but this usually settles quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help.

You can walk and do everyday activities straight away. However, you must avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for a few days.

Do not drive for at least 24 hours after your injection. Arrange transport or ask the hospital to book a taxi if needed.

Most people return to work as soon as they feel ready.

Arthrosamid® is considered safe, but all medical procedures carry some risk. Your consultant will explain these before treatment.

Possible side effects include:

  • Temporary pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Short-term stiffness or tenderness
  • Rarely, a Baker’s cyst (fluid-filled swelling behind the knee)
  • Allergic reaction (very rare)
  • Joint infection (rare and treatable with antibiotics)

Is the injection painful?

No. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. You may feel pressure but not pain. Tell your consultant if you feel discomfort.

When will I notice results?

Some improvement may occur within 24 hours, but most patients feel significant relief within four weeks. Full benefits usually appear between four and twelve weeks.

Can both knees be treated?

Yes. Your consultant will advise the best approach if both knees are affected.

How long does it last?

Studies show Arthrosamid® can provide relief for up to five years

How is it different from hyaluronic acid injections?

Both cushion and lubricate the joint, but hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body within months. Arthrosamid® integrates with joint tissue and lasts much longer.

  • Flexible appointments
