Injection Therapy at the Ridgeway Hospital

A joint injection can help to relieve swelling, pain and stiffness caused by inflammation. This can help you rehabilitate effectively and help you to return to normal activities sooner by ‘breaking the cycle’ of pain and inflammation. It can also aid the diagnosis of your condition if it is not clear what is causing your pain. You may have a local anaesthetic injected at the same time to allow for temporary pain relief and to help locate where your pain is originating from. Common conditions that could benefit from injection therapy:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Rotator cuff pathologies
  • Frozen shoulder/capsulitis
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Trigger finger

There are very few reasons people wouldn’t be able to have injection therapy, your physiotherapist will discuss this with you as part of your assessment. Your physiotherapist would usually need to know if you have had any previous injections, if you had any adverse reactions or allergies to medications, if you are pregnant, or if you have an infection.

We offer both steroid injections and Durolane (hyaluronic acid) injections.

DUROLANE is a single-injection treatment that delivers high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) to provide sustained relief from osteoarthritis (OA) pain. Formulated with the same HA found naturally in the human body, DUROLANE acts as a supplemental lubricant and shock absorber within the joint.

Its unique gel-bead structure enhances resistance to degradation, ensuring prolonged effectiveness from just one injection.

Key Benefits of DUROLANE:

  • Effective Pain Relief
DUROLANE delivers powerful, long-lasting relief from OA pain. Clinical studies show that 95% of patients did not require additional pain medication between 10 and 18 weeks post-treatment. It also outperforms corticosteroids in duration of relief.
  • Proven Safety
DUROLANE is safe for repeated use, with a low incidence of adverse events and allergic reactions.
  • Convenience
With just one injection, DUROLANE minimises clinic visits and allows patients to return to their daily routines quickly.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life
By reducing pain and improving joint function, DUROLANE helps patients stay active and may delay the need for joint replacement surgery.

Who May Benefit from DUROLANE:

DUROLANE may be an appropriate treatment option for individuals who:

  • Have been diagnosed with mild to moderate osteoarthritis
  • Experience osteoarthritis in the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, wrist, fingers, or toes
  • Have not responded to other osteoarthritis treatments
  • Require a synthetic product due to allergies to animal-derived ingredients
  • Are motivated to resume normal daily activities
  • Wish to delay joint replacement surgery with a treatment that is safe for repeated use
  • Are not candidates for surgery and seek a nonoperative solution for long-lasting pain relief
  • Want to reduce reliance on NSAIDs and pain medications
  • Prefer to avoid repeated corticosteroid injections

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections, also known as corticosteroid injections, are used to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly into painful joints or soft tissues. This treatment helps reduce inflammation and alleviate pain in the affected area.

The relief provided by steroid injections can last from several weeks to a few months, depending on the individual and the condition being treated.

These injections are often effective in reducing swelling, stiffness, and discomfort caused by inflammation. By interrupting the cycle of pain and inflammation, they can support more effective rehabilitation and help patients return to their normal activities sooner.

Steroid injections are commonly recommended for individuals with overuse injuries or inflammatory conditions, especially when other physiotherapy approaches have not provided sufficient relief.

If it is not clear what is causing your pain, an injection can also be used to help aid the diagnosis. A local anaesthetic injection provides temporary pain relief to help locate where your pain is coming from.
