If you need a diagnostic ultrasound scan, The Priory Hospital in Birmingham, part of Circle Health Group, offers fast access to high-quality imaging in a modern, supportive environment.

Ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. It is commonly used to investigate symptoms, monitor health conditions, and provide reassurance.

At The Priory Hospital, you’ll benefit from experienced radiologists and sonographers, state-of-the-art technology, and clear explanations of your results. Whether you require an abdominal scan, a musculoskeletal ultrasound, or a transvaginal examination, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, it does not use radiation, making it one of the safest imaging techniques available.

During the scan, a small handheld probe called a transducer is placed on the skin or inside the body, depending on the area being examined. The probe emits sound waves, which bounce off internal tissues and are then converted into moving images displayed on a monitor.

Ultrasound can be used to examine many parts of the body, including the abdomen, pelvis, heart, blood vessels, and joints. It is commonly used in pregnancy to monitor the development of the baby, but it also plays a vital role in diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions.

How much does an ultrasound cost at The Priory Hospital, Birmingham?

The cost of an ultrasound scan at The Priory Hospital depends on the complexity of the scan and whether more than one area of the body is examined, as well as whether any additional imaging or follow-up is needed.

At Circle Health Group hospitals, you will always receive clear, upfront pricing before your appointment. If you are using private medical insurance, ultrasound is often covered, provided the scan has been requested by a consultant or GP.

For self-funding patients, flexible payment options are available to make access to private imaging more affordable.

What does a transvaginal ultrasound show?

A transvaginal ultrasound (sometimes just called a vaginal ultrasound) is a type of pelvic scan used to examine the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes.

Instead of placing the probe on the outside of the abdomen, the sonographer inserts a specially designed transducer a short distance into the vagina, allowing for very detailed images.

This type of ultrasound is often used to investigate symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or difficulty conceiving. It can help diagnose conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and early pregnancy complications.

Although the idea of a transvaginal scan may feel daunting, most people find the experience uncomfortable rather than painful. It is carried out in a private, comfortable setting, and the sonographer will explain every step to help you feel at ease.

Can ultrasound detect cancer?

Ultrasound scans can sometimes detect signs that may indicate cancer, such as abnormal growths, masses, or changes in tissue structure.

For example, it is often used to examine the liver, kidneys, pancreas, ovaries, and testicles for unusual findings. However, ultrasound alone cannot usually confirm a diagnosis of cancer. If something suspicious is detected, further tests such as blood tests, MRI scans, CT scans, or a biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis and plan treatment.

At The Priory Hospital, our consultants use ultrasound as part of a comprehensive diagnostic pathway, ensuring that if further investigations are needed, they can be arranged quickly and efficiently, all under the same roof.

Can you eat before an ultrasound?

Whether or not you can eat before your ultrasound depends on the type of scan being performed. For some abdominal scans, particularly those looking at the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, or bile ducts, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand.

This is because food and fluid in the stomach or intestines can make it harder to obtain clear images. For other types of ultrasound, such as pelvic, musculoskeletal, or vascular scans, there are usually no restrictions, and you can eat and drink normally.

Your consultant or booking team will provide clear instructions in advance so you know how to prepare.

Why do you need a full bladder for an ultrasound?

In some cases, particularly with pelvic or pregnancy scans, you may be asked to arrive with a full bladder.

A full bladder helps push the intestines out of the way and acts as a window for the ultrasound waves, allowing clearer images of the pelvic organs or developing baby.

Although this can feel slightly uncomfortable, it significantly improves the accuracy of the scan and reduces the chance of needing repeat imaging. Once the scan is complete, you will be able to use the bathroom immediately.

How does an ultrasound work?

Ultrasound works by using high-frequency sound waves that are beyond the range of human hearing. When these waves are directed into the body using a handheld probe, they bounce back differently depending on the type of tissue they encounter.

For example, sound waves pass easily through fluid but bounce back strongly from denser structures like bone. These returning echoes are picked up by the probe and translated into moving images on a monitor.

Because ultrasound can distinguish between different types of tissue in real time, it is ideal for examining soft organs, guiding biopsies or injections, and monitoring the movement of blood through vessels using Doppler ultrasound.

It is quick, painless, and free from radiation, making it a safe option for adults, children, and pregnant women.
