  • Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the endometrium (the lining of your womb) grows in other areas of the pelvis such as the fallopian tubes, bladder and ovaries, leading to inflammation and scar tissue. Endometriosis varies in severity depending on how far it has spread, and which organs are affected. Symptoms include pelvic pain, heavy periods and problems getting pregnant.

Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is a type of keyhole surgery used to remove endometriotic tissue. The procedure aims to improve symptoms and prevents the tissue from spreading to other areas.

Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis surgery is normally performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be asleep for the procedure. Depending on the severity of your endometriosis, the surgery can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over six hours.

    What happens during the surgery?

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect:

    • Your surgeon will make a small incision (cut) in your abdomen near your belly button
    • Your abdomen is filled with gas to allow your surgeon to see inside your abdomen more clearly
    • A laparoscope (a thin tube with a small camera and light on one end) is inserted through the incision
    • Your consultant examines your pelvic organs on a screen via images from the camera to look for endometriotic tissue
    • Any endometriotic tissue is cut away, freeing the affected organs
    • The incision is closed with stitches
  • Your consultant may recommend laparoscopic excision of endometriosis surgery if you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, and your symptoms haven’t improved with nonsurgical treatments such as medication and targeted physiotherapy.

  • There are many benefits of laparoscopic excision of endometriosis surgery, including:

    • Endometriosis can be diagnosed and treated during one procedure
    • The surgery is minimally invasive and uses only small incisions
    • Improved pain and fertility in six out of 10 patients
    • Lower recurrence rate compared to other types of surgery
    • Reduces the risk of the disease progressing and spreading to other organs

  • After your laparoscopic excision of endometriosis surgery, you will wake up in the recovery room where you will be monitored closely until you are ready to go to your room. You’ll spend at least one night in hospital, more if your endometriosis was severe and your surgery more complex.

Your consultant will talk to you about what to expect during your recovery before your surgery, and you’ll be supported throughout your recovery by your multi-disciplinary healthcare team.

At the Priory, physiotherapy is included in your post-surgery care plan to speed up and optimise your recovery. Our expert team of physiotherapists will teach you breathing exercises to prevent chest infections, improve digestion and lymphatic drainage, and stretching exercises to improve lymphatic drainage, help prevent blood clots and encourage you to move around after your surgery.
