When we refer to robotic surgery, or robotics-assisted surgery, we don’t mean an operation performed by a robot. The procedure is still performed by your consultant urological surgeon. The robotic element is simply a technical surgical platform that your surgeon uses to help them be as precise as possible. 

A robotic prostatectomy, which might also be called a robotic radical prostatectomy, or a robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, is a type of keyhole surgery to remove all or part of your diseased prostate performed with the help of a robotic system.

All of our patients will be assigned a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Robotic-assisted prostatectomy using the da Vinci surgical robot

Should you require surgery to remove your prostate, you might be offered a robotic-assisted prostatectomy. The Park Hospital is the only private, UK-hospital beyond London to own a da Vinci robotic surgical system. 

The robot consists of a series of mechanical arms controlled by a highly trained surgeon, who is seated at a console on the other side of the room. This console translates your surgeon’s hand movements in real-time to the instruments attached to the robotic arms, while allowing them to view the operation with unprecedented clarity via a high-definition, 3D video feed.

The primary advantage of robotic surgery over open surgery is that it allows surgeons to conduct operations through the tiniest of incisions in your skin. In contrast to traditional ‘open’ surgery for prostate removal, this technique is proven to cause less bleeding, less scarring, and allow for a shorter stay in hospital and a quicker recovery time. 

Based at The Park Hospital, Nottingham Prostate Centre has access to a dedicated oncology unit providing chemotherapy and radiotherapy services in partnership with Genesis Care.
