Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases affecting the eyes and visual system (the connection between the eye, optic nerve, and brain). This field covers a wide range of concerns from common vision problems, such as short-sightedness, to more serious conditions, such as cataracts or glaucoma.
An ophthalmologist are highly qualified doctors who specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the eyes. This can include performing eye exams, prescribing medication, suggest vision correction aids (like glasses or contacts) and performing surgery.
Visit an ophthalmologist or another eye care specialist as soon as you notice any changes in your vision or unusual symptoms.
The cost of eye surgery will depend on your individual circumstances. At the time of your appointment your consultant will discuss all options with you and ensure all your questions are answered.
Our fixed-price packages include the cost of your relevant treatment and all appropriate aftercare appointments. However, any pre-surgery diagnostic tests and your consultant's outpatient appointment consultation fee are charged separately.
Our flexible payment options help you spread the cost of your payment across a time period that suits you.
If you have private medical insurance, we can arrange direct settlement with your provider. However, you should check in advance to see if your treatment is covered. For more information, visit our private medical insurance page.
Your consultant ophthalmologist will tailor your treatment plan based on your individual circumstances and health concerns.
Available treatment options for various eye concerns include:
If you experience short sightedness (myopia), long sightedness (hyperopia), or an astigmatism, laser eye surgery may be recommended so you can regain better vision. There are many types of laser eye surgery including LASIK, SMILE, and LASEK.
Depending on the success of the procedure and individual recovery, you may be discharged the same day. Recovery time depends on the individual, but, in general, it can be up to two weeks.
If you notice blurry vision or changes to the focus of vision, this may be due to the development of a cloudy lens called a cataract. It often occurs as a natural process of ageing.
For cataracts, we offer swift surgery to replace the lens with an artificial implant. If you are recommended the procedure, you should be able to go home the same day as the surgery and see improved vision within a few days.
If you want to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses, you may be recommended for lens exchange surgery. The procedure involves replacing the natural eye lens with an intraocular lens to help improve your vision.
It can be an ideal treatment option for patients with various forms of astigmatisms or for those wanting to avoid cataract surgery later in life.
You may not be suitable for this procedure if you are over the age of 40 and have an eyeglasses prescription.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve due to high pressure inside the eye caused by fluid buildup. This can lead to irreversible vision loss if untreated.
Surgery for glaucoma is a relatively quick and simple procedure, serving to relieve the intraocular pressure in your eye. If recovery goes well, you should be able to go home the same day as the procedure.
You may be recommended for eyelid surgery if you have conditions such as eyelid lumps, bumps, lesions, blepharitis, meibomianitis, dry eye and contact lens issues, and upper and lower lid cosmetic surgery to remove excess skin and tissue (blepharoplasty).
The type of eyelid surgery will be recommended by your consultant based on your individual needs and medical history.
Other ophthalmic diagnostics and treatments offered here at The London Independent include:
You will have an initial appointment with one of our expert consultant ophthalmologists to discuss your condition and or your symptoms. They will also run through with you your medical and family history to get a better understanding of your general health and help eliminate what may be concerning your eyes.
They will also physically examine your eyes using tools, such as a biomicroscope, ophthalmoscope, or a tonometer, to assess what concern might be affecting your eye or your existing eye condition’s severity. If your consultant suspects a cause of concern, they may recommend you go for further testing.
Once your consultant has evaluated your eye’s health and reviewed any relevant test results, they will discuss with you what your available treatment options are including any appropriate surgical procedures.
