What is an ECG (Electrocardiogram)?

An ECG or electrocardiogram is a simple, painless test that measures the electrical activity of your heart. It records how fast your heart is beating, the rhythm of your heartbeat, and the strength and timing of the electrical impulses that make your heart contract.

During the test, small sticky sensors (called electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. These sensors are connected to a machine that records your heart’s electrical signals as a series of lines or waves on a screen or printout.

The ECG provides valuable information about your heart’s rhythm and overall function. It is one of the most commonly used tests in cardiology and forms a key part of many heart assessments and health checks.

At The London Independent Hospital, ECGs are carried out by trained cardiac physiologists or nurses, with results interpreted by experienced consultant cardiologists.

What does an ECG show?

An ECG can help detect a wide range of heart conditions and abnormalities. It shows how your heart is beating and whether its electrical signals are travelling normally through the heart muscle. This allows doctors to spot irregularities such as:

  • Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) – including atrial fibrillation or flutter
  • Heart attacks (past or current) – changes in the ECG can show signs of reduced blood flow or damage to the heart muscle
  • Heart enlargement – caused by high blood pressure or valve disease
  • Coronary artery disease – reduced oxygen supply to the heart muscle
  • Electrolyte imbalances – abnormal potassium or calcium levels affecting heart rhythm

Your consultant may recommend an ECG if you have symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat
  • Unexplained fatigue

Sometimes, an ECG is performed as part of a routine check-up, pre-surgery screening, or employment medical to ensure your heart is functioning normally.

If the ECG shows any abnormalities, your cardiologist may recommend further tests such as an echocardiogram, stress ECG (exercise test), or 24-hour Holter monitor for continuous heart rhythm monitoring.

How long does an ECG take?

A standard ECG is very quick. It typically takes around five to ten minutes to perform.

The entire appointment, including preparation, attaching sensors, and removing them afterwards, usually lasts no more than 20 minutes.

You’ll be asked to remove clothing from the waist up so that the electrodes can be placed on your chest. A hospital gown or cover will be provided to maintain your comfort and privacy.

Once the electrodes are attached, you’ll be asked to lie still and breathe normally while the machine records your heart’s electrical activity. The test is completely painless, and there are no side effects or recovery time. You can return to your normal activities immediately after.
