What is MRI MSK self-referral?

MRI MSK self-referral allows you to directly book an MRI scan for musculoskeletal problems exclusively, without being referred by a GP or consultant.

This service is suitable for concerns relating to:

• Muscles
• Bones
• Joints
• Spine (neck, upper/mid back, lower back and pelvic region)

Please note: this service does not include brain imaging or non-MSK conditions.

Can I refer myself for an MRI scan?

As a part of the MRI MSK self-referral service, you can refer yourself for an MRI scan related to musculoskeletal issues only. This means you won’t need a GP or consultant to do this on your behalf.

We do not offer MRI self-referrals for conditions that don’t concern the MSK system. If you need an MRI scan for another condition, please arrange a consultation with one of our expert consultants to discuss your condition further.

• MRI scan(s) at Lincoln Private Hospital
• Detailed image reporting by a consultant radiologist (within 72 hours)
• Your MRI report shared with your NHS GP to support ongoing care

A telephone consultation with a registered physiotherapist, who will:

• Explain your MRI findings

• Discuss what they mean in everyday terms

• Recommend appropriate treatment or next steps

Three body Parts – £1,000

One body part = one joint (for example, left knee). Scans of ‘both’ joints (e.g. both hips) count as two body parts.

2. Complete the form with details about:
• Your symptoms and medical history
• The area(s) you want scanned (up to three body parts)

If you need help completing the form, our Imaging team can assist by phone.

      3. Return the form by email or in person

      4. Clinical review & booking:

• A consultant radiologist will review your request
• Our team will contact you to arrange your MRI appointment

      5. Scan, report and follow-up:

• MRI scan completed
• Results report produced within 72 hours
• Physiotherapy telephone consultation arranged within a few days

Important information to note

• This service is only for MSK conditions (muscles, bones, joints, and spine)
• Scan results must be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional
• Radiographers and radiologists cannot interpret results directly with patients
• AI tools will not be used to analyse MRI reports
