Treatments for hip pain
If your hip pain and/or stiffness is mild, it can be easy to dismiss it as a natural part of ageing. When the symptoms are more severe, your mobility may be impacted to the extent that you can no longer do many of the things you most enjoy. While a visit to a GP or a physiotherapist may be helpful in the early stages of these symptoms, patients with more persistent symptoms will usually be referred to an expert specialising in Hip Surgery. Some patients also self-refer to us in order to get this help faster.
At The Highfield Hospital, our Consultant Hip Surgeons have helped countless people to say goodbye to debilitating, life-limiting hip pain and regain pain free function and movement in the hip. If you would like to meet with a Consultant for assessment, diagnosis and a discussion about any suitable treatment options, please book an appointment online and we will arrange that for you.
Should non-surgical treatments not provide you with adequate symptom relief, you may require some type of hip surgery. There are a number of different operations available for the hip, including:
Total hip replacement surgery involves removing the damaged hip joint and replacing it with a new artificial one (a prosthesis). This is usually required when advanced osteoarthritis in the hip has caused such degradation in the joint that function and movement is severely limited.
Although there are a number of operations available, surgery will not always be needed to treat hip pain.
For certain symptoms and conditions, a form of keyhole surgery known as hip arthroscopy may be needed to help diagnose the problem. A thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and light (this tube is known as an arthroscope) is passed through a small cut in your hip. This transmits a live feed to a screen, giving your Consultant a clear view of the inside of your hip joint. Certain issues can sometimes be corrected during a hip arthroscopy, which helps avoid the need for additional surgery in the future.
Depending on your circumstances, your Consultant may advise joint preservation treatment to help protect and maintain the function in your hip and delay the need for more major surgery such as total hip replacement. Your consultant will be able to discuss this further with you if appropriate for your condition.
If your hip joint is more significantly damaged, total hip replacement surgery may be recommended as the best way to get you out of pain and restore mobility.
Whatever the extent of your hip pain and stiffness, your Consultant will ensure you receive the ideal treatment to get you out of pain and to effectively manage any other symptoms.
They will carry out a physical examination of your hip as well as your back, because hip pain can be referred from problems in the back and occasionally from other areas
Additional diagnostic tests and investigation a may be needed, and these can all be easily arranged for you. Our on-site facilities include X-rays, CT, MRI and Ultrasound, giving you fast access to comprehensive imaging as required.
Once a diagnosis has been made, your Consultant will discuss the results with you and talk through suitable treatment options.
If it’s determined that you do in fact need hip surgery, we can arrange that for you as soon as possible.
