MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body.
For joint problems, an MRI can give a detailed view of structures such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. It can help provide more information about what's causing your symptoms.
Unlike an X-ray, an MRI does not use ionising radiation.

What can an MRI scan show?
An MRI can provide detailed images of soft tissues and structures within and around a joint. A dedicated Radiologist will determine whether MRI is appropriate based on your symptoms and the area being investigated.

Which joints can you have scanned?

  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Wrist
  • Knee
  • Hip

Before your scan

Before your appointment, we'll provide information about how to prepare. You'll also be asked to complete a safety questionnaire to make sure an MRI is suitable for you.

During your scan

You'll lie on a moving bed which gently slides into the MRI scanner. The scanner makes loud knocking and tapping sounds while the images are taken, so you'll usually be given headphones or ear protection.

You'll need to keep as still as possible during the scan, and you'll be able to communicate with the MRI team throughout your appointment.

Images will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist and your report will usually be available within 48-72 hours.

You'll then have your physiotherapy assessment within 5 working days or less, where your symptoms, assessment and MRI results can be discussed with you.
Your physiotherapist can help you understand what your results mean and talk through the options available to you.
