Cardiology is the branch of specialist medicine focused on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting your heart and cardiovascular system.
This includes your heart muscle, valves, blood vessels, and the electrical system that controls your heart rhythm.
Cardiologists assess symptoms, carry out in-depth investigations, and develop treatment plans to support both your immediate concerns and long-term heart health.
Early assessment is particularly important, as many heart conditions can be effectively managed when identified at an early stage.
The cost of private cardiology care depends on the type of consultation and any diagnostic tests required.
You can choose to fund your treatment through self-pay (paying for yourself) or use private health insurance. We work with most major providers, and our friendly advisory team can help guide you through using your cover.
Our flexible payment options help you spread the cost of your payment across a time period that suits you. We offer fixed-term monthly payment plans over one to five years with no deposit required. If you decide to pay over 10 months, you will pay interest-free. If you are paying for a longer period, you will pay 9.9% APR.
You may be referred to see a consultant cardiologist if you are experiencing symptoms that could be related to your heart, or if there are concerns identified during a routine check-up or test. While some symptoms can be mild or intermittent, they may still benefit from specialist assessment to rule out any underlying issues and provide reassurance.
Common reasons for a referral include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath during activity or at rest, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, fainting episodes, or ongoing, unexplained fatigue. You may also be advised to see a cardiologist if you have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or if previous investigations (such as an ECG, blood tests, or imaging) have shown abnormal results.
In some cases, a referral may be recommended even in the absence of symptoms, particularly if you have risk factors such as diabetes, a smoking history, or a sedentary lifestyle. A consultant cardiologist can carry out a more detailed assessment of your heart health, which may include further diagnostic tests such as an echocardiogram, stress testing, or longer-term heart rhythm monitoring.
Importantly, being referred to a cardiologist does not necessarily mean that something serious is wrong. Often, it is a proactive step to better understand your heart health, identify any potential concerns early, and ensure you receive the most appropriate advice. Early assessment can provide clarity, peace of mind, and a clear plan to help you maintain a healthy heart moving forward.
An echocardiogram is a non-invasive, painless ultrasound scan that produces detailed, real-time images of the inside of your heart, allowing your cardiologist to assess both its structure and how effectively it is functioning.
Echocardiograms are commonly used to investigate symptoms, monitor existing heart conditions, or provide reassurance where there are concerns about your heart health. The test does not involve radiation, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterwards, with care always taken to your ensure comfort and privacy throughout.
During the test, which typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, you will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination couch (often on your left side to provide the best view of the heart), while a small amount of gel is applied to your chest. A handheld probe is then moved gently across your skin to capture moving images of the heart as it beats.
This enables your cardiologist to evaluate how well the heart is pumping, how the valves are working, and how blood flows through the chambers, as well as to assess the size and shape of the heart.
After your echocardiogram, the images are reviewed by your consultant cardiologist who will interpret the findings in the context of your symptoms and medical history.
In many cases, results can be discussed shortly after the scan or at a follow-up appointment. If any changes are identified, your cardiologist will explain what this means and whether further investigation, monitoring, or treatment, is required.
An echocardiogram is often part of a wider assessment of your heart health. Depending on your symptoms, your cardiologist may recommend additional tests to build a complete picture of your heart health.
These may include an electrocardiogram to assess your heart rhythm, longer-term monitoring for intermittent symptoms, or a blood pressure assessment.
During an electrocardiogram, small adhesive sensors (electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms, and legs, which are connected to a machine that records the timing and pattern of your heartbeat. The test usually takes just a few minutes, is completely painless, and does not involve any radiation.
An ECG can also provide valuable information about your heart rhythm and rate, helping to detect abnormalities such as irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), signs of previous heart attacks, or strain on the heart. It is often one of the first tests performed if you are experiencing symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath. However, because it only captures a snapshot of your heart’s activity at that moment, it may not always detect intermittent issues, which is why longer-term monitoring may sometimes be recommended alongside it.
One common method to monitor intermittent symptoms is a Holter monitor, a small portable device worn continuously for 24 to 48 hours (or sometimes longer). It records your heart rhythm throughout normal daily activities, helping to identify irregularities that happen sporadically.
For symptoms that occur less frequently, an event recorder may be used. This device can be worn for several days or weeks, and you can activate it when you notice symptoms, allowing your consultant to match how you feel with what your heart is doing at that exact moment.
Each test is chosen carefully to ensure your diagnosis is accurate and your care is appropriate.
