Arthrosamid® is a minimally invasive injectable treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It involves an injection of a non-biodegradable hydrogel into the knee joint, with ultrasound guidance used where appropriate.

The hydrogel is designed to work alongside the joint’s natural synovial fluid, helping to provide cushioning within the joint. This may help reduce friction, ease pain and support improved movement.

As the hydrogel is designed to remain within the joint, Arthrosamid® may provide longer-lasting symptom relief compared with some other injectable treatments. Results vary from person to person.

When you arrive, a member of our team will welcome you, talk you through the treatment and answer any questions you may have. You’ll be asked to provide consent before the procedure begins.

Before treatment: You’ll receive antibiotics before your injection to help reduce the risk of infection. You’ll then wait for approximately one hour to allow the antibiotics to take effect.
During the procedure: You’ll be made comfortable while the treatment area is cleaned and a local anaesthetic is administered. Your consultant will then give the Arthrosamid® injection, using ultrasound guidance where appropriate.
Treatment time: The injection itself usually takes around 15–20 minutes.
After the injection: A small dressing will be placed over the injection site.

After your procedure

Arthrosamid® is performed as a day-case treatment, so you can usually go home shortly after your appointment. You may have some mild discomfort, swelling or tenderness once the local anaesthetic wears off. This should generally settle within a few days.

You can usually return to your normal daily activities, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for a few days.
For your safety, you should not drive for 24 hours, so please arrange for someone to take you home.
You can return to work when you feel comfortable and able to do so.
