Private dermatological treatments for your skin

Our skin gives us our sense of touch, protects our body and helps us to regulate our temperature.

As the largest organ in the human body, the health of our skin has an important role to play in our overall health and quality of life. Unfortunately, skin is fragile and can be damaged by a number of things, including:

Irritants, allergens and Ultraviolet radiation

  • Disease
  • Injury
  • Genetic factors
  • Stress

Skin problems are very common and often very distressing. When present on visible areas of the skin, such as the face or arms, it can often cause self-confidence to drop.

Despite the plethora of creams and lotions available in the market, many skin conditions need medical intervention to resolve or even achieve control. Dermatology is the study and treatment of the skin, hair and nails. A doctor who specialises in this area is known as a Consultant dermatologist.

A dermatologist, because of many years of training in this field, will always be the best person to see to help the skin conditions. With their expertise in skin health, they can determine the best treatment option(s) for your specific needs based on a thorough assessment and diagnosis.

At The Droitwich Spa Hospital, our Consultant Dermatologists provide management and treatment for all skin conditions. Why not book an appointment today to ask their advice for your problem? They would love to help you.

Some of the skin conditions frequently seen and treated by the dermatology team at The Droitwich Spa include:

  • Acne - causes spots and oily skin, predominantly on the face, neck and back
  • Contact dermatitis – when certain substances come into contact with the skin, they may cause it to crack, blister or become itchy
  • Eczema - a group of conditions that cause dry and irritated skin. Tends to be a long-term condition
  • Psoriasis – thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system. Causes patches of skin that are red, dry and scaly. Tends to cycle between flaring up and then calming down
  • Rosacea – an inflammatory skin condition that causes flushing around the face and neck.
  • Hives (urticaria) - a raised, itchy rash on the skin.
  • Skin cancer - one of the most common cancers in the world
  • Hair and pigment disorders
  • Conditions related to sun exposure
  • They can also investigate and treat:
  • Inflammatory skin diseases
  • Skin allergies
  • ‘Lumps and bumps’ on the skin
  • Mole abnormalities

Whatever skin problem you have, our dermatology team will provide you with expert assessment and diagnosis. Should treatment be necessary, they’ll be able to arrange that for you simply and quickly. They can also discuss if your condition requires an ongoing referral.

When you first meet with your Consultant Dermatologist at The Droitwich Spa Hospital, they will ask you about your symptoms. They will want to know things like:
  • The symptoms you have
  • How long you’ve had your symptom for
  • Any treatments you’ve tried (and whether they helped in any way)
  • If there is anything you are worried about because of your symptoms (for example, are you worried that you might have some type of skin cancer?)
  • Your past history of any skin condition or skin cancers
  • Other medical issues and any medications you take

They will take a clinical history and examine your skin. Skin conditions can sometimes require additional investigations such as:

Blood tests

Allergy testing - helps show what is causing an allergic reaction in your skin

Biopsy - a sample skin is removed and sent for analysis.

Your Consultant will be able to arrange any of these additional investigations for you as required. Once the results of any tests are back, these will be discussed with you and any suitable treatments options explained. Treatments for skin conditions may include watchful waiting, medication, application of a topical cream/ointment or surgery. Some of the medications or treatments might require a subsequent referral to the NHS by your GP, in which case your consultant will discuss this with you.

Different types of skin surgery can be carried out. These include:

Excision of skin lesion and skin cancers– the lesion is surgically cut away and sent for further analysis

Mole removal - may be necessary if the mole is suspected to be cancerous. Alternatively, you might want to have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons.

Skin biopsies- for suspected lesions or diagnosis of a rash.

Your Consultant will see you for follow-up appointments at suitable intervals to assess the effects of any treatment. If anything needs to be adjusted or changed, this is easily done. If your symptoms come back again, or if you have any questions or concerns at any time, it is easy to book a time to meet with your Consultant again
