Arthrosamid® is an innovative treatment for knee osteoarthritis, delivered through a series of injections directly into the knee joint, often performed using ultrasound guidance. The injections contain a non-biodegradable hydrogel, designed to cushion the joint, reduce pain, and improve mobility.

The hydrogel thickens the natural joint fluid (synovial fluid) and binds with surrounding tissue, creating a cushioning effect. This reduces friction, eases pain and improves movement. Because the hydrogel is non-degradable, it remains in the joint for years, offering longer-lasting relief as opposed to other injectable treatments.

To find out if Arthrosamid® is right for you, call us or book online today to arrange a private consultation with one of our experienced specialists at Droitwich Spa Hospital.

Arthrosamid® is used to treat osteoarthritis in the knee. Osteoarthritis is a common condition where the protective cartilage within the joint wears down over time. This can cause the bones to rub together, leading to pain, stiffness, inflammation, and reduced mobility.

While osteoarthritis can affect many joints—including the hips and hands—Arthrosamid® is currently approved for use in the knee only.

Arthrosamid® offers several benefits over current injectables for knee osteoarthritis including:

  • It is highly effective, with patients reporting reduced pain and improved mobility within just four weeks.
  • It is minimally invasive with a fast recovery time.
  • It is long-lasting when compared to similar treatments. A single treatment can relieve pain for up to three years.
  • It is safe, with a low risk of complications and side effects.
  • It can delay the need for knee replacement surgery.
  • It is suitable for patients who cannot undergo surgery.

Arthrosamid® may be a suitable treatment for you if you have moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis that hasn’t improved with treatments such as lifestyle changes, medication, or physiotherapy. It can also be a good option for younger patients who want to delay knee replacement surgery, or for patients who want to avoid the recovery time after surgery.

It is also suitable for older patients who might not be eligible for knee replacement surgery due to health reasons.

Is there anyone who can’t have Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® may not be suitable for everyone. Tell your consultant about any medical conditions and allergies you have, and any other medications you are taking (including over-the-counter medicines and supplements) before having treatment with Arthrosamid.®

Arthrosamid® may not be safe for you if you:

  • Have a condition called haemophilia, where your blood doesn’t clot properly
  • Take medicines called anticoagulants to thin your blood
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an infection in or around your knee
  • Have had a knee arthroscopy within the past six months
  • Have poorly controlled diabetes
  • Are having major dental treatment
  • Have an autoimmune condition such as multiple sclerosis (MS)Addison’s disease, or coeliac disease

  • When you arrive, a member of our team will welcome you, explain the procedure, and answer any questions. You’ll be asked to sign a consent form before treatment.
  • You will be given antibiotics beforehand to reduce the risk of infection. You will then, need to wait for a period of one hour for the antibiotics to take effect.
  • During the procedure, you’ll be made comfortable while the area is cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic. The consultant will then administer the Arthrosamid® injections, and will choose whether to use ultrasound guidance.
  • The procedure itself takes around 15 to 20 minutes
  • A small dressing will then be applied.

After your procedure

  • Arthrosamid® is a day-case treatment, so you can go home shortly after your appointment. You may experience mild discomfort or swelling once the anaesthetic wears off, but this usually settles within a few days. Simple pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can help if needed.
  • You can return to most normal activities straight away, but it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days. We recommend not driving for 24 hours, so please arrange transport home.
  • You can return to work when you feel ready.

Physiotherapy after Arthrosamid® is an important part of achieving the best possible results from treatment. It helps to build strength, improve joint stability, and restore confidence in movement as pain gradually reduces.

To support your recovery journey, we are also offering a reduced rate on physiotherapy sessions for all Arthrosamid® patients.
