A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of your large intestine (colon and rectum)
If you have been advised to have a colonoscopy, The Blackheath Hospital in Greenwich, part of Circle Health Group, provides expert endoscopy services in a safe, comfortable, and private environment.
Our experienced gastroenterologists and endoscopy nurses perform colonoscopy procedures with care and precision, using advanced imaging technology to deliver fast, accurate results. Whether you need investigation for ongoing digestive symptoms or routine bowel screening, we provide prompt appointments, clear explanations, and comprehensive aftercare to support your peace of mind.
A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inside of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. During the test, a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera at its tip, called a colonoscope, is gently passed through the rectum so your doctor can view the entire lining of your bowel in real time.
The procedure helps identify problems including inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, or abnormal growths known as polyps. Polyps are small tissue lumps that are usually harmless but can sometimes develop into bowel cancer if left untreated. During a colonoscopy, your consultant can remove these growths or take small samples (biopsies) for laboratory testing.
Colonoscopy is one of the most accurate ways to assess bowel health and detect early signs of colorectal disease. It’s commonly recommended if you experience ongoing symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal pain, or blood in your stool, or as part of routine bowel cancer screening.
At The Blackheath Hospital, colonoscopy procedures are performed by specialist consultants in partnership with skilled endoscopy nurses. Prices vary depending on the type of procedure, whether sedation is used, and whether any biopsies or polyp removals are performed during the examination. You’ll receive a detailed breakdown of fees before your procedure, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
If you have private medical insurance, most insurers cover colonoscopy when it is medically necessary. Our advisors will confirm eligibility with your provider before booking. For self-pay patients, flexible payment plans are available to spread the cost of treatment.
The colonoscopy procedure itself usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, though the exact duration depends on your anatomy, the complexity of the examination, and whether any biopsies or polyp removals are performed.
Including preparation, sedation, and recovery time, you can expect to be in the hospital for around two hours. Most patients can go home the same day once the sedation has worn off, although you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours.
Your consultant will provide you with specific aftercare advice before you leave, and you’ll be able to return to normal activities within 24 hours.
A colonoscopy allows your doctor to view the inside of your bowel directly, making it one of the most effective ways to detect a range of conditions. These include:
If any abnormalities are found, your consultant may take biopsies or remove polyps for further analysis. Many issues can be treated or managed effectively when identified early through colonoscopy.
To ensure clear visibility during the procedure, your bowel needs to be completely empty. This requires a special preparation diet the day before your colonoscopy.
You’ll typically be asked to follow a clear liquid diet, which usually includes:
You’ll also be given a bowel cleansing solution to drink, usually the evening before your procedure. This laxative clears the colon so that the consultant can obtain clear, accurate images. During this time, it’s normal to need frequent trips to the toilet, so it’s best to stay close to home.
You should avoid red or purple liquids, dairy products, and solid foods during this preparation period, as these can interfere with visibility inside the bowel.
Once you take the bowel preparation solution, you’ll typically start having bowel movements within one to two hours. Most people experience frequent trips to the toilet for several hours as the bowel is completely emptied.
The intensity of the bowel movements varies, but it’s common to spend several hours on and off the toilet, especially during the first few hours after taking the solution. Your clinical team will provide detailed instructions about when to start the prep and how to stay comfortable during the process.
You may find it helpful to apply barrier cream to prevent irritation and to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of clear fluids throughout.
If your consultant takes biopsies or removes polyps during your colonoscopy, these samples will be sent to a specialist pathology lab for examination.
Results are usually available within seven to fourteen days, although complex cases can take longer. Once the analysis is complete, your consultant will review the findings and explain them to you during a follow up appointment or phone consultation.
If the results are normal, your consultant will let you know whether further monitoring is needed. If an issue is identified, they will discuss the most appropriate treatment or next steps to ensure you receive timely care.
