What is blood cancer lymphoma?
Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system, part of the body’s immune system. It can cause a range of symptoms and may require specialist investigations and treatment.
What types of lymphoma blood cancer are there?
There are several types of lymphoma. The two main groups are:
- Hodgkin lymphoma
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
Within these groups, there are many subtypes, each with its own characteristics, behaviour and recommended treatments. Common distinctions include:
- Slow-growing (indolent) lymphomas, which may develop gradually and sometimes be monitored before active treatment is needed
- Faster-growing (aggressive) lymphomas, which may require prompt treatment
Your consultant at The Alexandra Hospital will:
- Take a detailed history of your symptoms
- Arrange or review tests, which may include blood tests, imaging scans and biopsies of lymph nodes or other tissue
- Identify the specific type and stage of lymphoma you have
- Explain what this means in terms of treatment options and outlook
Understanding your exact type of lymphoma is important, as this guides the choice of treatment and how your condition is monitored over time.
What symptoms can lymphoma cause?
Lymphoma can cause a variety of symptoms, such as:
- Painless swelling of lymph nodes (for example, in the neck, armpit or groin)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fevers or drenching night sweats
- Persistent tiredness
- Itching without an obvious cause
- Recurrent infections or feeling generally unwell
These symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions. If you are concerned, a consultation at The Alexandra Hospital can help clarify what is happening and whether further tests are needed.
What treatments are available for lymphoma blood cancer?
Treatment for lymphoma varies depending on the type, stage, your age, general health and personal preferences. Common treatments include:
- Chemotherapy: Medicines that target and kill cancer cells, often given in cycles
- Immunotherapy: Treatments that help your immune system recognise and attack lymphoma cells
- Targeted therapies: Drugs that specifically target certain features of lymphoma cells
- Radiotherapy: High-energy radiation directed at affected areas to destroy cancer cells
- Stem cell (bone marrow) transplant: In selected cases, to allow higher doses of chemotherapy and help restore blood cell production
Some people with slow-growing lymphomas may initially be managed with ‘active monitoring’ or ‘watch and wait’, where you are closely observed and treatment is started if and when it becomes necessary.
Your consultant at The Alexandra Hospital will:
- Discuss the benefits and potential side effects of each option
- Explain the aims of treatment (for example, cure, long-term control or symptom relief)
- Support you in making informed decisions about your care
- Arrange appropriate follow-up, including blood tests and scans to monitor your response
