What is bladder cancer?

Bladder cancer is a condition where abnormal cells develop in the lining or wall of the bladder. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can make a significant difference to outcomes and quality of life.

Are there different types of bladder cancer?

Bladder cancer is not a single disease. The main types include:

  • Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, which is confined to the inner lining of the bladder
  • Muscle-invasive bladder cancer, where the cancer has grown into the muscle layer of the bladder wall
  • Less common types involving different cell types

Your treatment plan will be tailored to the specific type and stage of your cancer. Your consultant will explain this clearly and answer any questions you have.

Can you fully recover from bladder cancer?

Whether you can fully recover from bladder cancer depends on several factors, including:

  • The type of bladder cancer (for example, non-muscle-invasive or muscle-invasive)
  • The stage and grade at diagnosis
  • Your general health and any other medical conditions
  • How well the cancer responds to treatment

Some early-stage, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers can be treated successfully and monitored over time, with many people remaining well. In other cases, bladder cancer may be more aggressive or may recur, requiring additional or more intensive treatment.

Your consultant at The Alexandra Hospital will explain:

  • The specific type and stage of your bladder cancer
  • The treatment options most appropriate for you
  • The aims of treatment (for example, cure, control, or symptom relief)
  • The importance of follow-up cystoscopies and monitoring

It is important to remember that ‘recovery’ can mean different things, from being free of detectable cancer to living well with ongoing monitoring or long-term treatment. Your team will support you in understanding your individual outlook and options.

What services are available to treat bladder cancer at The Alexandra Hospital?

The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester offers a range of services for people with suspected or confirmed bladder cancer, including:

  • Diagnostic tests, such as cystoscopy (a camera test of the bladder), imaging scans and urine cytology
  • Surgical treatments, such as transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) and operations for more advanced disease, where appropriate
  • Intravesical therapies, where treatments are placed directly into the bladder
  • Systemic treatments such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy, coordinated with oncology specialists
  • Supportive care and follow-up clinics

You may be referred to The Alexandra Hospital by your GP or another specialist, or you may choose to self-refer for an initial consultation. Your consultant will review your history, examine you, and arrange any necessary investigations before discussing a personalised treatment plan.

The hospital team will work closely with you to coordinate appointments and provide information at every step, so you understand your diagnosis, treatment choices and what to expect.

What are the symptoms of bladder cancer?

Common symptoms that may suggest bladder cancer include:

  • Blood in your urine (this may be visible or picked up on a urine test)
  • Needing to pass urine more often than usual
  • Sudden, urgent need to pass urine
  • Pain or burning when passing urine
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections that do not respond as expected

These symptoms can also be caused by many other, less serious conditions such as infection or bladder inflammation. However, it is important not to ignore them, particularly if they are persistent or recurrent.

If you notice blood in your urine, you should seek medical advice promptly. At The Alexandra Hospital, your consultant can:

  • Take a detailed history of your symptoms
  • Arrange investigations such as cystoscopy, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans
  • Discuss the results with you and advise on appropriate treatment or further tests
