A sinus endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure which uses a camera, attached to a thin and flexible tube, known as an endoscope, to look at your nasal and sinus passages. An ENT consultant may suggest this procedure if they require more information about sinus and nasal problems such as blockage, congestion or infection.
The naspharyngoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows the consultant to examine the back of your throat, called nasopharynx, by inserting a flexible scope tube through your nose. The procedure helps the ENT consultant check for problems such as growths or bleeding.
Ear suction, also known as aural microsuction, is a procedure that uses gentle suction to remove wax from the ear. A build-up of ear wax may cause symptoms such as earache, itchiness or difficulty hearing. The procedure is usually quick and can help relieve symptoms once the wax has been removed.
Pure tone audiometry is a hearing test used to assess how well you can hear different frequencies and sounds. It can help identify the type and degree of hearing loss.
Tympanometry assesses the function of the middle ear, including the eardrum, and can help identify problems such as fluid behind the eardrum or issues with middle ear function.
Acoustic reflex testing measures how the muscles within the middle ear respond to loud sounds. It can provide additional information when assessing hearing and middle ear function.
Speech audiometry assesses how well you can hear and understand spoken words. It may be used alongside other hearing tests to provide a more complete assessment of your hearing.
This test measures how comfortable you are with different levels of sound and can be useful when assessing sensitivity or discomfort in response to loud sounds.
Tinnitus matching helps assess the pitch and loudness of tinnitus by comparing the sounds you experience with specific tones or noises.
This test assesses how well the Eustachian tube is functioning. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and helps regulate pressure within the ear.
Aural microsuction is a procedure used to safely remove excess ear wax and debris from the ear canal. It can help relieve symptoms such as blocked ears, reduced hearing and discomfort.
ENG/VNG testing assesses eye movements to help investigate problems affecting the balance system. It may be recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as dizziness or vertigo.
The Dix-Hallpike test is used to assess whether changes in head position trigger dizziness or vertigo. It is commonly used when investigating certain types of positional vertigo.
Video head impulse testing assesses the function of the balance organs within the inner ear and can help identify problems affecting the vestibular system.
VEMP testing assesses specific parts of the inner ear and vestibular system. It can provide information about how different components of the balance system are functioning.
Caloric testing assesses the function of the balance organs in each inner ear individually. It may be used as part of an assessment for dizziness, vertigo or other balance disorders.

They will carry out a clinical examination of the affected area(s) and may feel your neck for the presence of swollen glands.
They may use an otoscope to examine your ears, and a bright light shone into your mouth can help highlight some problems.
Many nose and throat conditions can be best investigated with an endoscopy. An endoscope is a small, thin tube with a camera and light at one end. It is usually connected to a video screen and transmits a real time video feed to it. A nasal/throat endoscopy involves passing the endoscope up your nose and around into the back of your throat. As the endoscope is moved along, your Consultant can look for anything unusual, such as a blockage, lump or swelling.
Additional investigations may sometimes be required, including X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound. These can all be arranged for you easily if needed.
Some symptoms or conditions may require a biopsy (removal of a sample of tissue that is then sent away for investigation). Depending on the location of the area to be biopsied, this may be carried out under ultrasound guidance.
