Weight loss surgery is also known as metabolic or bariatric surgery. It is commonly used as a treatment option for people who have tried other weight loss tactics like diet and exercise, but these have not worked for them. It can result in considerable weight loss and help reduce the impact of many obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Weight loss surgery is a significant operation and a physical, emotional, and life-changing journey that requires a patient's serious commitment. The vast majority of patients have battled with conventional diets, exercise plans and methods for a long time without sustained success. While weight-loss surgery is highly effective, it is not a quick fix and still requires commitment to making significant lifestyle changes. Weight loss surgery can help give you the motivation and kick-start you need to finally achieve your weight loss goals.

The first task of a weight loss surgeon is to establish what you’re hoping to achieve from weight loss surgery, assess your situation, and help you determine the best course of action for you, including which procedure may be best.

Ultimately, weight loss surgery is about giving you back control of your weight so that you can live a healthy lifestyle in the future.

There are four main weight loss surgery procedures that have their benefits and use for different people. You and your consultant will come to a decision together about the specific procedure that’s right for you.

  • Gastric balloon - This procedure consists of inserting a balloon into your stomach through a tube passed down your throat. The balloon is then inflated and left inside your stomach. The balloon takes up space inside your stomach, which reduces your appetite and causes you to feel fuller for longer. This is considered more of a short-term solution when a patient has to lose a specific amount of weight for a specific reason. For example, if they need to lose weight to have another procedure such as a hip replacement or before more invasive weight loss surgery.

  • Gastric band - A gastric band is a band that’s placed around the top portion of your stomach to constrict it slightly so it can’t hold as much food all at once, making you feel fuller faster. The band can be adjusted to let more or less food in depending on your individual needs and appetite requirements. You may find you need it tightened if you aren’t losing as much weight as you need to. This procedure can be reversed by removing the band.

  • Gastric sleeve - Sleeve gastrectomy is a keyhole surgical procedure that has become popular in recent years. It’s a permanent procedure and is usually used when a patient has a significant amount of weight to lose and is looking for a long-term solution. This procedure removes a large portion of your stomach so that it takes the shape of a tube. The result is that you have a much smaller stomach, meaning you have a lower appetite and feel fuller much more quickly.

  • Gastric bypass - A gastric bypass procedure is the most established of all the bariatric surgery operations. When receiving a gastric bypass, the surgeon will create a passage that bypasses your stomach, creating a new smaller stomach by stapling the top of your existing stomach. Patients who are of a larger weight or have comorbidities might benefit from bypass surgery more than others.

Between your initial consultation and admission for your procedure, you will be able to speak to the specialist nurse and the dietician if you have any queries or concerns before you are admitted.

When you arrive at Ross Hall Hospital for your first appointment, you will meet your welcoming consultant and the bariatric nurse specialist.

Your initial consultation usually lasts around one hour, in which time your consultant will learn about and assess your medical background and discuss your reasons for wanting to undergo weight loss surgery and your concerns.

The consultant will go through all the available treatment options and start to develop the concept of a healthy eating plan as this is a crucial component of the weight loss journey even with surgery. You will receive written information about all the different choices of operations.

You will leave the first consultation with three further appointments booked. Two appointments will be with a senior dietician, and the third will be back with your consultant and the specialist nurse. This initial process will be spread over a six week period. The goal of these appointments is for you to learn everything you need to ahead of a procedure, to give you the best chance of success after surgery.

Once a treatment has been agreed upon, the procedure will then be arranged for a suitable time within the next few weeks. Thanks to the vastly experienced experts at Ross Hall Hospital, you may even see some initial success resulting from these preliminary stages.

The period of time between the initial consultation and surgery is important to help you to prepare for surgery both physically (by getting fitter and losing a small amount of weight through diet changes) and mentally.

When you arrive for your procedure, you will be visited by your consultant and anaesthetist. They will answer any last questions you have and provide reassurance before your operation.

After your procedure, you will be cared for on the ward by our dedicated nursing team. Most patients will stay two nights after a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass procedure and will usually be allowed to go home before the third. Your consultant will visit you twice per day while you are in the hospital to ensure you are happy and healthy.

You’ll be offered a 1-year package of follow-up appointments with your dietician, specialist nurse and your consultant.

The first follow-up appointments, during the 3-4 months after surgery, are used to check you are getting adequate nutrition and are in line with positive post-surgical recovery.

Moving forwards, appointments will help in the transition from liquid foods to solid foods and check you are losing weight at a healthy rate. These follow-up appointments will be arranged every four weeks or so. The emphasis becomes the persistent implementation of a healthy eating plan.
