Ophthalmology is a medical speciality concerning the diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of conditions relating to the eye and surrounding facial features such as tear ducts, eyelids and orbits (eye sockets).

The eye is a small but incredibly complex part of the body. We work with a large number of Consultants at Eye Care Scotland, all with their particular sub-specialities within the field of Ophthalmology. We’re able to offer over 30 different treatments for both common and rare eye conditions.

There are many symptoms that would prompt a visit to a Consultant Ophthalmologist. Common reasons include:

  • Blurriness
  • Double vision or loss of sight
  • Seeing spots
  • Changes to how you see colours
  • Physical changes to the eye or eye pain
  • Lumps and bumps around the eye
  • Droopy eyelids or eye bags

Because the eye is such an intricate part of the body, there are many different symptoms that might occur. If you’re experiencing anything unusual relating to your eyes, it’s important that you get seen by a specialist quickly.

Eye Care Scotland sees patients for many different reasons, from common and easily treated issues to rarer and more severe conditions.

Common medical eye conditions include:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • Cornea related conditions such as Keratoconus
  • Retinal issues such as Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Watery eyes
  • Skin cancer on the eyelid

For more specific details on these conditions and more, you can visit our dedicated Eye Care Scotland web pages.

Cataracts are the most common medical condition that would prompt a visit to an Ophthalmologist. Symptoms usually present as cloudy or blurry vision that develops over time and can cause more severe symptoms if left without treatment. Cataract surgery is a safe and straightforward procedure to replace the affected lens with an artificial one.

Cataract surgery is an ever-improving area of medicine and has moved forward dramatically in recent years. There are now advanced, laser-assisted options that provide some additional benefits to patients who are suitable for this procedure.

Eye Care Scotland is the only provider of laser-assisted cataract surgery in a hospital environment in Scotland. We’re proud to offer this advanced cataract treatment to many of our patients. Laser assistance allows the consultant to be more precise and offer more customised treatment options.

Traditional cataract surgery is still a popular and highly successful option for many patients and offers the same result of significantly improved vision.

Your consultant will discuss the various options available to you after a thorough diagnostic examination.

Laser eye surgery aims to reduce or eliminate your need to wear glasses and can offer a significant lifestyle improvement to people who find their glasses or contact lenses get in the way of certain activities.

Laser eye surgery is a safe and effective procedure and can be performed quickly, with only a topical anaesthetic required. Eye Care Scotland is the only provider of laser eye surgery in Glasgow within a hospital, which means we follow the same robust clinical governance and safety procedures for laser eye surgery as we do for all of our hospital treatments. This unique benefit means you’ll receive the highest quality care, led by expert Consultant Ophthalmologists.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses and are considering laser eye surgery, we offer a completely free consultation with one of our highly skilled Optometrists. As part of this free consultation, you’ll receive all diagnostic examinations required to understand if you’re suitable for laser eye surgery. If you are suitable, our Consultant Ophthalmologist will be able to get a guide price for treatment, discuss all of the available options and recommend which one is most suitable for you and provide you with all the information you need about the next steps.

Lens Replacement Surgery is a suitable alternative for many patients who aren’t suitable for Laser Eye Surgery. Again, all consultations and diagnostics are free of charge to determine your suitability, with no obligation to proceed.

Read more about Laser Eye Surgery and Lens Replacement Surgery on the Eye Care Scotland website.
