Gynaecology is the study of the female reproductive system, its functions, disorders and diseases. This can include complaints ranging from menstrual problems to uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and cervical polyps. Consultant Gynaecologists can also provide advice on contraception and early pregnancy.

Nearly all women will suffer from a gynaecological problem at some point in their life. It may not be life-threatening and may only affect them at certain times of the month, but it can still impact the quality of life and the ability to do everyday tasks.

The type of treatment you will receive will be tailored to you and depend on your symptoms, age and other lifestyle and health factors. If further diagnostic tests or treatment are required, these will be explained to you fully during your consultation.

If you are experiencing any of these common concerns, consider booking a private appointment with one of our gynaecologists:

  • Heavy periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Intermittent or irregular periods
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain during or between periods
  • Itching or burning
  • Irregular discharge
  • Endometriosis

A subspecialty of Gynaecology is Urogynaecology which deals with conditions of the pelvic floor and bladder, including incontinence, pelvic floor issues and bladder problems.

We routinely conduct further investigations on patients experiencing the above, utilising a multitude of tests, some of which include, MRI, CT Scan, Ultrasound, Urinalysis, Urodynamics studies, and Internal examinations (colposcopy), all available at Ross Hall Hospital.

Whatever the severity of your condition, diagnosis and treatment will be tailored to you and conducted by our professional gynaecology consultants supported by the experienced multidisciplinary team at Ross Hall Hospital.

When you book an initial consultation at Ross Hall Hospital, our enquiries team will give you all the information you need to choose the right consultant for your needs and offer an appointment at a time to suit you.

During your appointment, your consultant gynaecologist will learn about and assess your condition by performing an examination and taking a history of your symptoms to get a clear picture of the situation, your concerns and to determine the appropriate next steps. This will most likely include the severity and type of pain you’re experiencing as well as any associated symptoms, such as changes to your menstrual cycle or general health symptoms, such as fatigue.

Your gynaecologist will also learn about your previous medical history, including any family history of similar symptoms or gynaecological and related conditions. This will allow your consultant to develop an accurate risk profile for your circumstances and request the most appropriate diagnostic tests as required.

At Ross Hall Hospital, our patients have access to a hugely comprehensive service for private gynaecology diagnostics and treatments. With a leading multidisciplinary team and cutting-edge facilities, you’ll always benefit from a quick and accurate diagnosis.

Following your initial consultation, our gynaecology consultants may request a variety of tests and diagnostic procedures, some of which may be available the same day:

  • Urinalysis - A test of the concentration, appearance and content of urine to detect and manage a wide range of possible conditions, such as urinary tract infections.

  • Urodynamics studies (UDS) - A variety of tests that examine how well the sphincters, bladder and urethra hold and release urine. There are numerous urodynamic tests, but they are usually performed together as one complete process regardless.

  • Ultrasound scans - A pelvic ultrasound is a dedicated ultrasound carried out by consultant gynaecologists. It is the most effective imaging method used to examine the uterus and ovaries.

  • MRI scans - A pelvic MRI scan is typically used by gynaecologists to see the organs, bones, blood vessels and tissues in the region. An MRI scan helps your consultant further investigate problems signified by other imaging tests.

  • CT scans - Similar to MRI scans, this would be used to investigate the pelvic region. However, as CT scans use X-rays, an MRI scan may be preferable for pregnant women.

  • Internal examination with a camera (known as diagnostic colposcopy) - A diagnostic colposcopy is a procedure used to examine possible abnormal cells in the cervix and is performed by inserting a device known as a speculum into the vagina to allow visibility of the area by the gynaecologist.

Following the tests, a follow-up appointment will be arranged with your consultant to discuss the results and determine the best form of treatment for you. Your consultant will provide clarity and answer any questions you might have at this time.
