How long does an ECG take?
A standard resting ECG usually takes less than 10 minutes. If you are having a 24 hour ECG, you will wear the monitor continuously for that period and return the device the next day. An exercise ECG typically takes 15–30 minutes, including preparation and recovery time.
Because the test is non-invasive and requires no recovery time, you’ll usually be able to go straight home afterwards. Results are often available quickly, with a consultant cardiologist reviewing them and providing a detailed report.
How long after a heart attack can it be detected by ECG?
An ECG is one of the most important tools for detecting heart attacks. In many cases, changes caused by a heart attack can be seen immediately on an ECG. These include specific alterations in the shape of the electrical trace that reflect damage to the heart muscle.
Even after the initial event, an ECG can often show evidence of a past heart attack. This is because the electrical activity of the heart may remain altered due to scarring or damaged tissue. Depending on the severity of the heart attack, these changes can sometimes be detected weeks, months, or even years later.
However, not all heart attacks leave clear ECG evidence. For this reason, your consultant may recommend additional tests, such as blood tests for cardiac enzymes, echocardiograms, or cardiac MRI, to build a complete picture of your heart health.
Benefits of going private for an ECG
Shorter waiting times
Choosing private care for your ECG gives you more control and peace of mind. At Ross Hall Hospital, one of the main benefits is shorter waiting times — you can book your test quickly at a time that suits your schedule, rather than waiting weeks for an appointment.
Continuity of care
You’ll also benefit from continuity of care, with your test and follow-up arranged through the same consultant-led service. This means your results are interpreted by a specialist who knows your medical history and can recommend the next steps without delay.
A personalised experience in a calming environment
Private care also ensures a more personalised experience. Appointments are unhurried, giving you time to ask questions and feel fully informed. Many patients value the comfort and privacy of our modern facilities, as well as the reassurance of one-to-one support throughout the process.
If further investigations or treatments are needed, we can arrange them promptly, avoiding the uncertainty of long waiting lists and ensuring your heart health is prioritised.
