Paediatric ophthalmology is a sub-specialty of ophthalmology centred around vision care in children, as well as visual development and eye diseases.

Within the paediatric eye care department, we see children from 3+ years and ensure they are treated appropriately by experienced Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologists in our child and family friendly environment.

There are a number of eye problems that can affect children. Some of the most common are squints (strabismus) and lazy eyes (amblyopia). Often these are confused as the same condition; this is not the case. We also have the ability to see paediatric patients for other conditions including watery eye (nasolacrimal duct obstruction), conjunctivitis, red eye and oculoplastics (including chalazions).

Many children that have eye problems often have other health or developmental issues which can either be related or incidental – this can have great impact on a child’s development and schooling. Our Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologists often work in a multi-disciplinary team to examine children to either confirm or exclude ocular signs of a multi-system disorder and help in the overall assessment and management of children with complex needs.

At your initial consultation for paediatric eye care appointments, patients are required to attend with a parent/s or guardian/s. Initial appointments are 30 minutes where the Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist will discuss the history and symptoms of the eye condition/s. For patients with amblyopia, our Paediatric Ophthalmologists work alongside an Orthoptist who carries out a number of tests to help provide the assessment required at the initial appointment.

By the end of the initial consultation, the Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist will be able to correlate all their findings and formulate a treatment plan for the patient, which may include surgical and/or non-surgical treatment.

We offer a number of treatments at Eye Care Scotland for paediatric patients. We offer squint (strabismus) surgery for either one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) eyes. This is carried out under a general anaesthetic.

For the management of lazy eyes (amblyopia), our Orthoptist monitors and advises on the progression of the condition. The management approach can include any/all of the following: eye patches, drops, brain training and eye exercises, and referral back to the community for glasses.

For oculoplastic surgery, we offer treatments including removal of lesion (including chalazion) and biopsy of lesion.

Prices for paediatric eye surgery start from:

  • Squint surgery (unilateral)(GA) – £3,600
  • Squint surgery (bilateral)(GA) – £4,850
  • Excision of lesion of eyelid (chalazion) - £2,000
  • Excision of lesion of orbit (GA) – £4,900
  • Biopsy of lesion - £2,000

We also offer flexible finance through our dedicated finance provider, Chrysalis Finance. Patients have the ability to spread the cost of their treatment over up to 5 years. If patients choose to spread the cost over 10 months, then these payments will be interest free. Should patients choose to pay over a period of 12 - 60 months, 14.9% APR will apply.
