During your initial consultation, your colorectal specialist will first learn about your medical history, your family’s medical history and your symptoms to get a clear picture of the situation, your concerns and determine the appropriate next steps.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, they will then usually examine the rectum and lower part of the colon using a specialist piece of equipment called a rigid sigmoidoscope. This small device uses light to allow a colorectal specialist to examine the area effectively.

Based on their findings, your colorectal consultant may request some further investigative tests to assess your condition. Occasionally, a flexible sigmoidoscopy may be required to enable the surgeon to see deeper into the colon.

Further diagnostic tests may be required following this. In some cases, it might be possible for you to have a scan or test on the same day as your initial consultation, but usually, we would arrange the test for a few days to a couple of weeks after your initial appointment at a time and day that suits you.
