At The Kings Park Hospital in Stirling, our Consultant Gynaecologists provide advice, diagnosis and treatment for women’s health conditions and disorders and diseases of the female reproductive system.

We offer quick and straightforward access to appointments, investigations, and treatments to help you get the answers you need to improve your quality of life. Consultations are arranged to suit your schedule – whether that be during the day or in the evening.

Gynaecology is concerned with women’s health specific to the reproductive system. It covers from early adolescence to adulthood through the reproductive years, menopause, and post-menopause.

Our expert Consultant Gynaecologists at The Kings Park Hospital help women experiencing heavy or painful periods, menstrual dysfunction, pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, vaginal prolapse (a bulge into the vagina), menopause and post-menopausal issues, including bleeding.

They cover all areas of gynaecology, except for fertility treatments. One gynaecologist is also an expert in colposcopy – a test for pre-cancerous changes in the neck of the womb (cervix), which happens at The Ross Hall Hospital.

Our Consultant Gynaecologists can provide assessments, diagnosis and treatment for female disorders and diseases ranging from period (menstrual) pain to ovarian cysts, non-cancerous growths called uterine fibroids (leiomyomas or myomas) and benign cervical growths (polyps).

They can also advise you on contraception, sterilisation, and early pregnancy disorders and can refer you to other specialists within the hospital team if required. For example, some skin conditions on the outside of the outer genitals (vulva) may require a dermatologist, and pain in the stomach may be bowel-related, requiring a gastroenterologist’s opinion.

Your gynaecologist also has access to women’s health physiotherapists who specialise in urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse.

The most commonly treated conditions include endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), abnormal smears, incontinence, and vaginal prolapse.

Our Consultant Gynaecologists also deal with cancer of the womb (endometrial cancer), uterus and ovaries. They may perform a hysterectomy to remove the womb if you have endometrial cancer through keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery or open surgery.

Treatments differ depending on your age, symptoms and whether you want to have children. Sometimes they may be purely tablets, such as HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for menopause or contraceptive pills.

Other treatments include:

• Mirena coil insertion – an intrauterine hormonal device (IUD) typically used for heavy periods
• Diagnostic procedures like hysteroscopy to look inside the womb with a camera
• Biopsy to remove small tissue samples
• Endometrial ablation to treat heavy periods
• Removal of ovarian cysts and masses
• Vaginal prolapse repair

Fast access to advice, diagnosis and treatment can quickly alleviate your fears and anxiety when you’re referred to our Consultant Gynaecologists. We accept referrals from GPs and other consultants and also see patients who wish to self-refer.

When you arrive at the hospital for your initial consultation, our receptionist will check you in and show you to a seat in our outpatient waiting area; your Consultant Gynaecologist will come to collect you and direct you into a private consultation room.

Your consultant will ask you to go over your problem’s history and then perform an external and internal examination if required. We always provide female chaperones. The examination will take place in the private consulting room, behind a curtain and you are provided with a sheet to cover areas not being examined.  Your consultant may examine your abdomen (tummy), the outside of your genitals, and inside the neck of the womb. We aim to make you feel as comfortable and as relaxed as possible, and you can stop the examination at any time should you wish.

Your Consultant Gynaecologist may do blood tests to look for evidence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or cancer markers to aid diagnosis. They may also carry out swabs, endometrial biopsies, smear tests, ultrasounds or refer you for an MRI or CT scan. Sometimes diagnostics take place at the same time as your initial appointment.

Your consultant will perform any ultrasound scans. Ultrasound produces sound waves to create an image of the inside of your body. Your consultant will be able to provide an immediate review, so you don’t have to wait for the results or a diagnosis.

Should your Consultant Gynaecologist advise you have a CT (computerised tomography) or a pelvic MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, these will take place at our sister hospital The Ross Hall in Glasgow. These scans provide highly detailed, clear images to help identify abnormalities. Ross Hall Hospital will be in touch will you to arrange this appointment.

If you require a follow-up appointment to go over your results or to discuss treatment, your consultant will arrange this with you, and this will take place back at Kings Park Hospital.

Treatment may consist of tablets like the contraceptive pill or HRT, the Mirena coil for heavy periods, or insertion of a pessary for vaginal prolapse – all of which can be done in the clinic.

Your consultant may advise surgical diagnostic procedures. These are when your consultant goes in with a camera to look for any abnormalities and treat them at the same time. A hysteroscopy is common and is when a camera is inserted through the vagina and into the womb. Another example is laparoscopy, which involves a camera being inserted through your belly button to look inside your abdomen. It’s a keyhole (laparoscopic) procedure for identifying and treating endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

If you experience heavy, painful periods, treatment may be endometrial ablation. This is when your consultant burns away some of your womb’s lining to reduce menstrual flow.

We also do hysterectomies which can be performed laparoscopically or open depending on your symptoms. Your consultant may suggest open surgery if the fibroid, cyst or tumour being treated is relatively large.

Most procedures are done under general anaesthetic and as a day case. It means you can go home the same day. More complex surgeries, such as a hysterectomy, may require an overnight stay. You’ll be provided with your private en-suite room with TV and WIFI.
