Consultant-led diagnosis and treatment for knee pain
Knee problems are very common, particularly as we get older. Pain induced by knee problems can make living an active, fulfilling lifestyle feel like an impossible feat. However, knee problems don’t have to control your life.
At Hendon Hospital in North London, we offer fast access to expert healthcare you can trust. Our national network comprises thousands of specialist consultants with proven track records of treating, managing, and even eliminating knee pain.
You can book your initial consultation with an orthopaedic consultant of your choice, and you’ll often be seen within 48 hours.
Your knee treatment costs will differ depending on which consultant you choose and the type of knee surgery you have.
Our flexible payment options help you spread the cost of your payment across a time period that suits you. We offer fixed-term monthly payment plans over one to five years with no deposit required. If you decide to pay over 10 months, you will pay interest-free. If you are paying for a longer period, you will pay 9.9% APR.
If you have private health insurance, your knee treatment will usually be covered by your provider. Speak to your insurer directly to find out.
We offer many effective surgical procedures to help with knee pain and stiffness, including:
A knee arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery. It is used to diagnose and treat knee problems that can cause chronic knee pain.
During a knee arthroscopy, your orthopaedic consultant will insert an arthroscope (a thin tube with a camera attached to the end of it) through a small incision made in your knee. This will allow your surgeon to examine the inside of your knee and determine the cause of your pain. Depending on what they find, they may also be able to perform treatment arthroscopically. If so, your surgeon will make more incisions in your knee, through which they’ll insert specialised surgical instruments to perform your required treatment.
Knee replacement surgery successfully reduces knee pain and restores function to the knee.
The knee joint is made of three main parts. If only one is damaged, your surgeon may recommend partial knee replacement surgery. The damaged part of your knee will be removed and replaced with an artificial component, leaving the rest of your joint intact.
If the damage is more extensive, you will be recommended a total knee replacement. During total knee replacement surgery, your consultant will remove the damaged ends of your femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) and replace them with a prosthesis. The base of your patella (kneecap) could also be removed and replaced with a prosthesis, but this will depend on the condition of your knee.
ACL reconstruction surgery can repair or replace a torn anterior cruciate ligament (a major ligament in your knee). ACL damage is often caused by a traumatic accident, generally when playing sports. It’s a very common injury among athletes, and in particular footballers.
ACL reconstruction helps significantly reduce knee pain and restore function to your knee, allowing you to continue to live an active lifestyle.
After 10-20 years, the prosthesis that was implanted during your knee replacement operation will need to be replaced.
During knee revision surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will remove the artificial components and carefully clean the joint. A new prosthesis will be fitted in its place.
Knee surgery typically takes around 1 to 3 hours, though it can range depending on the surgical technique applied, your general health, and the extent of damage to your knee.
Your surgeon will discuss the details of your operation with you beforehand, so you are aware what to expect from your procedure.
