Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing a range of conditions related to the urinary tract in both men and women, as well as the male reproductive system. Your urinary tract is the system in your body responsible for producing, storing, and eliminating urine, which is your body’s way of expelling waste and excess fluids. There are many conditions that affect your urinary tract system, including:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Kidney stones
  • Bladder infections (cystitis)
  • Interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome)
  • An overactive bladder
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Prostatitis
  • A kidney infection (pyelonephritis)

At the Circle Cheshire Clinic in Northwich, our team of dedicated consultant urologists can diagnose and treat your urinary condition through a variety of excellent services. Urological conditions often cause many uncomfortable symptoms that can induce anxiety and interfere with your daily life. This includes needing to pee more than usual and having to get up in the night several times to relieve yourself, as well as pain when you urinate and sometimes urinary incontinence. We understand the physical and emotional impact these symptoms can have, which is why we provide the highest standard of private healthcare for people struggling with a urinary condition.

We don’t just treat people based in Northwich – people travel to experience our exceptional care from outside of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and beyond. When you go private, you can access the treatment you deserve quickly with a consultant of your choice. To find out more about Circle Cheshire Clinic, call us or book online to arrange your first appointment.

Your first appointment with a urology specialist is an important step in your journey of having private healthcare treatment. This is the time in which your consultant will get to know you, your condition, and your needs. Although it can feel nerve-wracking being in hospital at first, remember that this is your time to get the expert advice you need in an environment built with you in mind.

The appointment will usually involve an analysis of your medical history as well as a physical pelvic examination to check for any areas of pain, especially around your bladder. Your consultant might decide that you need scans or tests, such as an X-Ray, MRI, or blood test, to confirm your diagnosis. You might be asked to return at a later date if this is the case. Your follow-up appointment to discuss the results of these tests will be arranged with your consultant.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your consultant will talk you through their findings in detail and what treatment options they recommend. They will answer any questions you might have and take the time to ensure you have a full picture of what to expect from treatment. After you have both decided on the best treatment option for you, they will let you know the cost of treatment, which will usually be in the form of a fixed-price package. If you need surgery, your consultant will suggest when this could take place.

There are many private treatment options for urological problems, both surgical and non-surgical. We offer a wide range of treatment options for different conditions to match your needs. Here are some of the most common surgical options performed by our excellent team of consultant urologists.

The excision of an epididymal cyst

This is a surgical procedure to remove a cyst from the epididymis, a coiled tube located behind your testicle that stores and transports sperm. This procedure is generally performed to relieve discomfort, pain, or swelling associated with the cyst. During surgery, your consultant urologist will make a small incision across your scrotum over the affected testicle to access the epididymis and cyst. Next, they will carefully expose the epididymis and isolate the cyst from its surrounding structures, using specialist instruments to excise (cut) the cyst by separating it from the epididymal tissue. This part is delicate, as the epididymis is made up of a network of fine tissue, but your surgeon will remove the cyst with accuracy and precision.

A suprapubic cystostomy

A cystostomy, or suprapubic cystostomy, is a surgical procedure that involves creating an opening in your lower abdomen to place a tube (known as a suprapubic catheter) directly into your bladder to drain your urine. This differs from a typical catheterisation, which is usually inserted through your urethra. You might need this type of catheterisation if you are struggling to urinate due to a blockage caused by a swollen prostate, or damage to your urethra. Your consultant urologist will make a small incision above your pubic bone and guide a catheter into your bladder, often using ultrasound imaging for a high-definition view of inside your body. The catheter is secured in place to drain your urine into an external bag, allowing your body to drain urine with a reduced risk of infection and pain levels compared to urethral catheters.

A therapeutic injection into your bladder neck

A therapeutic injection into your bladder neck is a simple, minimally invasive treatment to help with stress urinary incontinence, which is the accidental leaking of urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or lift something heavy. This condition often happens when the muscles around your bladder neck or urethra (the tube urine passes through), weaken, making it harder to control your urine flow. During this procedure, your consultant will inject a special "bulking" material around your bladder neck and urethra to help these tissues close more tightly. The injection is performed using a cystoscope, which is a thin tube with a light and camera attached to the end of it. Your consultant uses the cystoscope to guide a tiny needle to your bladder neck and inject the bulking material, which is like a soft gel.

Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a straightforward, minor procedure used as a form of contraception in men. During a vasectomy, your urologist will block or cuts the tubes (called the vas deferens) that carry sperm from your testicles to mix with semen during ejaculation. This stops sperm from being part of the semen, making it impossible to reproduce. Having a vasectomy does not affect your ability to have sex or disrupt hormone levels.

Circumcision

Circumcision is a procedure during which your urologist removes the foreskin, which is the fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of your penis. This is often performed on newborn babies, but it can also be performed at any age for reasons such as religious tradition, cultural custom, or certain medical needs. Some people need a circumcision due to recurrent infection or pain when retracting their penis. By removing the foreskin, your glans is exposed, making daily hygiene easier and potentially lowering the risk of certain health issues, depending on your individual circumstances.
