During your initial consultation, your consultant will take the time to thoroughly understand your symptoms, medical history, and personal healthcare objectives. The appointment typically includes an in-depth discussion about how your condition affects your daily activities and a physical examination of your spine to identify potential underlying causes. If further evaluation is required, your consultant may recommend additional tests, such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, or nerve studies, to gain a comprehensive understanding of your condition. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to review these findings and refine your treatment plan.
A discectomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure on your spinal nerves or spinal cord caused by a herniated or ‘slipped’ disc. The intervertebral discs act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) of your spine, and when a disc becomes damaged or bulges out, it can compress nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness, often radiating into your arms or legs. During a discectomy, your consultant carefully removes the portion of the disc that is pressing on your nerve, sometimes using minimally invasive techniques with small incisions and specialised instruments. This procedure can significantly reduce your symptoms, improve your mobility, and enhance your quality of life, making it a common and effective treatment for conditions like sciatica or cervical radiculopathy.
Spinal fusion surgery is a procedure designed to join two or more vertebrae in your spine, eliminating motion between them to provide stability and reduce pain caused by conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal instability, or scoliosis. During surgery, the affected vertebrae are fused using bone grafts, metal plates, screws, or rods to encourage your bones to grow together into a single, solid unit. This reduces movement in the affected area, alleviating pain and preventing further damage. Spinal fusion is often recommended when other treatments, such as physiotherapy and medications, have not been successful.
Lumbar decompression surgery is a procedure designed to relieve pressure on the nerves in your lower (lumbar) spine, often caused by conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or degenerative changes. This pressure can lead to symptoms like chronic lower back pain, leg pain, numbness, or weakness, commonly known as sciatica. During the surgery, your consultant removes or reshapes structures that are compressing your nerves, such as bone, ligament, or disc material. Techniques may include a laminectomy (removal of part of the vertebra), a discectomy (removal of part of a herniated disc), or a foraminotomy (widening of the nerve passageways). The goal is to create more space around your spinal nerves, alleviating pain and improving your mobility. Many people experience significant pain relief and improved quality of life following lumbar decompression surgery.
