Living with a skin condition can be highly distressing.

Many skin problems cause symptoms such as constant itching and swelling, which can significantly impact your everyday life and emotional well-being. The symptoms of a skin condition often vary depending on many factors, including your skin type, genetics, and the function of your immune system.

Regardless of whether your symptoms are severe or more manageable, experiencing any kind of skin problem can be disruptive and unsettling. Not only can it cause physical pain and discomfort, but it can also lead to feelings of self-consciousness and low self-esteem about your physical appearance.

If you are struggling with the physical and emotional impact of having a skin problem, it is important to remember there are many treatment options available to help improve and often eliminate your symptoms. These are delivered by consultant dermatologists who specialise in the treatment of skin diseases

Your first consultation with a specialist is a key milestone in your private healthcare experience. During this visit, your consultant dermatologist will begin to understand your specific condition, symptoms, and personal healthcare needs. While it’s normal to feel a little unsettled by an unfamiliar clinical environment, it’s also a time to gain valuable advice from an expert in a setting tailored for your relaxation and well-being.

This initial consultation usually involves a detailed discussion of your medical history, along with a physical examination of your skin. Your consultant might recommend additional diagnostic tests, such as tissue samples and blood tests, to further investigate your condition. If these tests are needed, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to review the results in depth.

Once your diagnosis is confirmed, your consultant will outline the findings and discuss various treatment options in a way that ensures you feel empowered and fully informed. They’ll take the time to address any concerns and provide a clear understanding of your next steps.

Should you both agree on a treatment plan, our customer care team will then explain the associated costs, usually within a fixed-price package. If surgery is necessary, you’ll be informed of potential dates, or if non-surgical options are recommended, you’ll leave with a clear path forward and a letter will be sent to your home summarising your diagnosis and potential treatments.

There are many treatment options for skin problems, which vary depending on your diagnosis. Here are some of the most common treatment options performed by our consultant dermatologists.

The surgical removal of a benign lesion

During this surgery, your consultant will carefully cut around the lesion (also known as a skin growth) with a scalpel, removing the abnormal growth along with a small margin of surrounding tissue to ensure that any potentially unusual or harmful cells are removed.
Depending on the size and depth of the lesion, you might need stitches across the incision to close the wound. If the incision is small, your consultant might opt for a bandage to cover it. The removed tissue is often sent to a laboratory, where it will be examined by a pathologist to confirm that it is benign.

The surgical removal of a malignant (cancerous) lesion

During surgery to remove a malignant skin lesion, such as melanoma or another type of skin cancer, your consultant will make an incision around the lesion, removing not only the cancerous tissue, but also a wider margin of healthy surrounding tissue to ensure that all cancer cells are eliminated. This is done to reduce the risk of the recurrence or spread of the disease. In some cases, your consultant might perform a more extensive excision if the lesion is deep or aggressive, potentially including nearby lymph nodes if they are concerned that the cancer has spread here. The removed tissue is sent to pathology for further analysis to confirm clear margins (no remaining cancer cells).

Cryotherapy for skin lesions

Cryotherapy for skin lesions is a minimally invasive treatment that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal skin cells. During the procedure, your consultant will apply the liquid nitrogen directly to your lesion, using either a spray device or a cotton-tipped applicator. The intense cold causes the targeted skin cells to become damaged and frozen before they are eventually destroyed. Within up to three weeks after treatment, your lesion will blister, scab, or peel off as the tissue heals. Cryotherapy is commonly used for benign skin lesions like warts, as well as some pre-cancerous lesions.

The surgical correction of lower eyelid ectropion

Lower eyelid ectropion is a condition in which your lower eyelid turns outward, causing your inner eyelid surface to be exposed and likely to become irritated and damaged. This type of surgical correction performed by our consultants involves repairing the misalignment of your eyelid without the use of complex reconstructive techniques like grafts, which would involve transferring tissue to your eyelid from another part of your body. The surgery is performed by tightening or repositioning your eyelid with specialist tools to correct the laxity (looseness). It helps dramatically improve your eyelid function, relieving symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and tearing. The exact method can vary depending on the severity of the ectropion, but this approach avoids the need for more complex surgery, which makes for a shorter and often smoother recovery period.
