What is an MRI scan?

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and an MRI scan is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use radiation. Instead, it captures highly detailed images of soft tissues, organs, joints, and other structures, helping clinicians detect abnormalities with exceptional accuracy.

During the scan, you’ll lie on a comfortable bed that slides into the MRI scanner, which is a large, open-ended tube. The machine uses magnetic fields and radio signals to take images, which are then reviewed by a consultant radiologist. MRI scans are particularly useful for examining the brain, spine, joints and muscles, as well as organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

At Bishops Wood Hospital, our MRI technology offers excellent image quality while keeping noise and scan time to a minimum. The procedure is safe, painless, and suitable for people of all ages. You’ll be in communication with our radiography team throughout, ensuring you feel at ease from start to finish.

Why might I need an MRI scan?

Your GP or consultant may recommend an MRI scan to help diagnose or monitor a wide range of conditions. MRI imaging is particularly effective for assessing:

  • Joint or muscle injuries such as ligament tears, cartilage damage, or sports injuries
  • Spinal problems including herniated discs, nerve compression, and chronic back pain
  • Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, brain tumours, or unexplained headaches
  • Abdominal and pelvic concerns including liver disease, kidney problems, or reproductive system disorders
  • Vascular and cardiac conditions to assess blood vessels, heart structure, or blood flow abnormalities

MRI scans are also used for pre-surgical assessment and for monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing treatment. Because of its precision and safety, MRI is one of the most trusted imaging techniques available.

If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, unexplained symptoms, or have been advised to have further tests after an X-ray or ultrasound, an MRI may be the next logical step in your diagnostic journey.

Our consultant radiologists will review your referral and ensure your scan is tailored to your specific needs, ensuring you receive the most accurate and relevant results.

Do I need to prepare for an MRI scan?

Once your referral is received, our team will confirm your appointment time and any necessary preparations. For most MRI scans, no special preparation is needed, although some may require fasting or contrast dye to improve image clarity. We will provide all relevant instructions in advance.

How much does a private MRI scan cost at Bishops Wood Hospital?

The cost of a private MRI scan can vary significantly based on factors including the part of the body being examined, whether one or more areas are to be scanned, whether contrast dye will be used, and what symptoms are being investigated.

We recognise that cost is a significant consideration when exploring medical imaging options. If you're curious about how much a private MRI scan costs, contact our team directly and they can provide you with a personalised quote.

Circle Health Group offers competitive, transparent pricing, so you won’t have surprises down the line. If you are interested in spreading the cost of payment for your treatment, we offer monthly payment options over a period of up to five years, with interest-free options available.

If you have private health insurance, most MRI scans are covered when medically necessary. Our patient services team can liaise with your insurer to confirm authorisation.

What happens during an MRI scan?

When you arrive for your MRI scan, you’ll be asked to remove any metal objects, such as jewellery or watches, as these can interfere with the magnetic field. You may also be asked to change into a hospital gown.

During the scan, you’ll lie comfortably on a motorised bed that moves slowly into the scanner. It’s important to stay as still as possible to ensure clear images are captured. The scan is completely painless, though you’ll hear some tapping or buzzing sounds as the machine operates. Ear protection or headphones are provided to minimise noise.

Most scans last between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of the imaging. You’ll be able to communicate with your radiographer throughout the procedure via an intercom. Once complete, you can usually go home straight away and resume normal activities.

If your scan involves contrast dye, this will be administered through a small cannula in your arm before or during the scan to enhance visibility of blood vessels or soft tissues.
