Julett Burnett: Reclaiming an active life with hip replacement surgery at Kings Oak and Cavell Hospitals

Julett Burnett, a vibrant 54-year-old Teaching Assistant and Hairdresser, embodies an energetic spirit. However, for years, hip pain affected her active lifestyle, impacting her from sleep to her passion for dancing.

Reclaiming an active life with hip replacement surgery Julett Burnett's storyJulett's history of long-distance running, including two London Marathons, instilled in her a deep appreciation for physical activity. However, after years of high-intensity training, she began experiencing hip pain six years ago. Initially intermittent, the pain intensified over time, making everyday activities increasingly challenging. "Squats and lunges were painful," Julett recalls, "and even sleeping became an issue. I couldn't sleep on my side, and sitting for long periods was uncomfortable." The pain eventually became a daily companion, forcing Julett to rely on strong painkillers.

Diagnosis and non-surgical options

An MRI scan revealed that Julett had bone spurs and arthritis in her right hip. The initial diagnosis and the suggestion of hip replacement surgery were difficult to accept. Julett explored various non-surgical options, including PRP treatments, which provided temporary relief. She also adopted a holistic approach, modifying her diet and incorporating anti-inflammatory supplements such as Turmeric.

While these measures offered some respite, the pain persisted and worsened in the winter in 2024, severely impacting her sleep and daily life. "Laying down was impossible," she explains. "My only relief was walking, and I had to do hairdressing standing up." The pain even affected her ability to enjoy a weekend trip to Amsterdam for a cousin's wedding. Recognising the impact on her quality of life, and especially on her 12-year-old son, Julett decided to seek a permanent solution. "I wanted to be how I was before," she says, "energetic and active."

A consultation with confidence

In July 2024, Julett had an initial consultation with Mr Patel. She immediately felt confident in his expertise and approach. "Mr Patel was very thorough," she recalls. "He was really encouraging and positive." The swiftness of the process, with surgery scheduled for August, was a welcome relief.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Julett's recovery exceeded her expectations. Discharged just two days after surgery, she found the initial post-operative period less painful than anticipated. The biggest challenge was sleeping on her back for six weeks, but she persevered. Physiotherapy played a crucial role in her rehabilitation, providing her with targeted exercises and boosting her confidence as she regained flexibility and strength.

A transformed life

Since her hip replacement, Julett's life has been transformed. "I can sleep so much better," she exclaims. "I'm a changed woman now!" She's rediscovered her love for dancing and music, activities that were previously hampered by pain. "I didn't realise until now how much the pain was affecting my life," she reflects.

A strong recommendation

Julett is enthusiastic about recommending hip replacement surgery to others facing similar challenges. "100%," she affirms. "I would encourage it. It's major surgery, but it's major life-changing too." She's even become a source of support for her aunt, who recently underwent the same procedure.
