Abdul’s transformative surgery at The Clementine Church Hospital

Abdul Aziz Al Harbi travelled 8000 miles across the world for life-changing treatment at The Clementine Churchill in Harrow.

Abdul Aziz Al Harbi travelled 8000 miles across the world for life-changing treatment at The Clementine Churchill in Harrow. He made the round trip from his home in Kuwait in West Asia to have treatment with the renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Mr. Al-Obaidi.

Following a serious car accident, Abdul faced the prospect of permanent disability and was told he was unlikely ever to walk again. His bones and joints had moved significantly out of position, making it impossible to walk, and after six months of being bed-ridden and facing intense pain, Abdul started to research international specialists to perform the complex surgery required to restore his mobility.

After many hours of research, he came across Mr. Al-Obaidi, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon with many years of experience in highly complex surgery following major trauma.

An instant connection

Abdul and Mr. Al-Obaidi bonded instantly. Mr. Al-Obaidi was able to offer consultations in Abdul’s native Arabic language, setting him at ease and helping them both to plan the complex logistics involved in the travel, surgery and recovery process.

In order to restore Abdul’s displaced bones to their correct position within his leg, he was required to have an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), which is a major procedure. It was a two-stage treatment plan that involved two separate surgeries.

In the first part of the procedure, Mr Al-Obaidi made an incision near the fractured site and manipulated Abdul’s bones into position. Abdul’s bones were then fixed into position using internal fixators.
In the second surgery, which took place two months later, the internal fixators were removed and screws were implemented into his leg permanently. This tendon release procedure involved cutting through the tendon, releasing stiffness of his lower limb and allowing a greater range of movement for Abdul.

Both surgeries were successful and following intensive physiotherapy, Abdul has now been able to return to his home and walk again.

Abdul said:

There was a time when the thought of walking again, returning to work and getting back to my old life seemed simply impossible, but thanks to my treatment at The Clementine Churchill, what seemed like a dream has become a reality. I am eternally grateful for this specialist care and life-changing treatment.

Consultant Mr Al-Obaidi said, “Abdulaziz was an absolutely remarkable patient with unbelievable determination and a fantastic outcome. I am glad we were able to help him throughout his journey.”
