Personal Profile

Dr Ziaudeen Ansari is a highly experienced Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and General Internal Medicine with over 25 years of clinical experience in respiratory care. He practises within the NHS at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, including City Hospital, Sandwell Hospital, and the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. He also provides private consultations within the Circle Health Group.

Dr Ansari is fluent in English and Tamil, enabling him to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population and provide accessible, patient-centred care.

He has a specialist interest in sleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), central sleep apnoea, parasomnias, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and other complex sleep-related conditions. He is the Lead Clinician for the Sleep and Home Ventilation Service at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, where he oversees comprehensive pathways for patients with sleep apnoea, chronic respiratory failure, neuromuscular respiratory weakness, and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. His leadership ensures coordinated, safe, and long-term management for patients with complex respiratory needs.

In his wider respiratory practice, Dr Ansari manages a broad range of lung and breathing conditions. His clinical expertise includes persistent and chronic cough, breathlessness (from initial assessment through to advanced investigation), asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD), bronchiectasis, and recurrent chest infections. He also has specialist expertise in pleural disease, including pleural effusions and complex respiratory presentations requiring multidisciplinary input.

Dr Ansari plays an active role in lung cancer diagnosis and care, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely investigation, accurate staging, and appropriate treatment planning for patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer.

He is highly skilled in advanced respiratory diagnostics and interventional procedures, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and bronchoscopy for diagnosis and staging of lung disease. He is also experienced in pleural procedures such as indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) insertion, pleural aspiration, and chest drain insertion, ensuring high-quality procedural care.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Ansari is a Royal College Tutor at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He is actively involved in medical education, appraisal, and postgraduate training, regularly delivering teaching in non-invasive ventilation (NIV), bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, and sleep medicine.

Since 2019, Dr Ansari has also undertaken medico-legal expert witness work in respiratory and sleep medicine, including personal injury and occupational lung disease cases. He holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate and produces reports in accordance with Civil Procedure Rules, providing clear, objective, and evidence-based expert opinions.
