He qualified his MRCP in 1995 and was subsequently awarded with fellowship of The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP), as well as Fellowship for The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI). Dr Mahmood did his original research in endoscopic anti-reflux therapy, and was awarded (MD) from Trinity College, Dublin in 2004.
He has vast experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy; his experience in endoscopy was recognised by the European Board of Gastroenterology, and was awarded with the fellowship of the European Board of Gastroenterology in 2004 (FEBG). Based on his significant contribution to research and teaching, he was awarded with an Honorary Senior Lecturer post for The University of Manchester in 2020.
Dr Mahmood has 25 years of experience in gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as both in diagnostic as well as therapeutic endoscopies, including OGDs (including stricture dilatation, managing oesophageal and gastric varices, managing UGI bleeds, APC treatment and EMRs) colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopy (including polypectomies, EMRs, dye spray technique for IBD surveillance colonoscopies) and ERCPs (including sphincterotomies, biliary brushings, plastic and metal biliary stent insertions, mechanical lithotripsy and CBD stone removals).
His endoscopy KPIs have always been above the national standards, his cecal intubation rate has always been close to 95%, Polyp detection rate 45% and polyp retrieval 96%. OGDs successful intubation 100%.
