Dr Waqas Gaba is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. He has held his substantive consultant appointment since September 2024, following UK specialist training and dual certification in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine.
Dr Gaba provides assessment and treatment for adults with digestive and liver conditions. He understands that persistent symptoms can affect eating, sleep, work and confidence, and that patients may feel frustrated when symptoms continue or previous investigations have not provided a clear explanation. His approach centres on listening carefully, understanding the patient’s concerns and explaining the available options in clear, accessible language.
His clinical practice covers acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion, swallowing difficulties, abdominal pain, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhoea, constipation and changes in bowel habit. He also assesses patients with iron-deficiency anaemia, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss and concerns about gastrointestinal disease.
He has a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and is involved in specialist multidisciplinary care for patients with complex IBD. His hepatology practice includes fatty liver disease, abnormal liver blood tests and chronic liver conditions. He welcomes patients seeking a second opinion, a review of ongoing symptoms or a clearer understanding of their diagnosis and treatment.
During a consultation, Dr Gaba reviews the patient’s symptoms, medical history, medications and previous investigations, considering how symptoms affect everyday life. He discusses possible explanations, whether further tests are appropriate and the benefits and limitations of treatment options. His aim is for patients to leave with a clearer understanding of their condition and an agreed plan for the next steps.
Dr Gaba is JAG-certified in gastroscopy and colonoscopy. His endoscopy practice includes diagnostic examinations, biopsy and polyp removal where appropriate, alongside NHS experience managing gastrointestinal bleeding.
He is actively involved in research, teaching and service improvement. His projects include improving access to inflammatory bowel disease advice through a virtual nurse clinic, examining outcomes after ERCP for malignant biliary obstruction and improving gastroenterology training and service delivery. His work has been presented at national and international gastroenterology meetings, including the British Society of Gastroenterology and United European Gastroenterology Week.
He also established GENIUS, a platform supporting junior doctors to participate in gastroenterology research, audit and quality improvement, and completed the British Society of Gastroenterology’s Leadership Project 90 programme in 2026.
At Lancaster Private Hospital, Dr Gaba’s focus is on providing thoughtful, individualised gastroenterology and hepatology care, helping patients understand their symptoms and make informed decisions about investigation and treatment.
