About Wai Yoong

Personal Profile

Mr. Wai Yoong is a Consultant Obstetrician and Urogynaecologist at North Middlesex University Hospital London and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London and Associate Professor at St George’s International School of Medicine. He has over 20 years of experience in surgical treatment of prolapse and incontinence. He also has a special interest in vaginal surgery and neuromodulation for overactive bladder problems.

After graduating from Queens University of Belfast in 1987, he went on to complete his general Obstetrics & Gynaecology training in Birmingham and London. During this time, he also completed an Urogynaecology Fellowship in Sydney, Australia. He was awarded his Doctorate (MD) degree by the University of London for his research on sickle cell disease.

Mr. Yoong is passionate about patient safety and is the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) Representative on the Joint Standing Committee for Patient Safety. He is a certified human factors facilitator and is part of a team of clinicians partnering with British Airways Flight Training to deliver a collaborative aviation and healthcare Human Factors training course using flight simulators and interactive facilitation to reduce medical errors.

He is the senior organiser of the RCOG Masterclass in Management of Massive Obstetric Haemorrhage. He is also the senior founder trustee of Haemorrhage After Childbirth Foundation, a charity dedicated to teaching skills to doctors and midwives on how to manage obstetric haemorrhage in various countries such as Jordan, Canada, Malaysia and Nepal. He was awarded the RCOG Sims Black Travelling Professorship (2014) and the Bernhard Baron Travelling Scholarship (2018) to travel to Jordan and Argentina respectively. 

Mr Yoong has published 140 papers in specialised journals on subjects such as vaginal surgery, surgical Management of PPH, human factors, Neuromodulation and enhanced recovery. He is on the Editorial Board of two specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology journals: The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (TOG) and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 

He is passionate about teaching and has received numerous teaching awards including a recent nomination as a Role Model in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2019;365:l4046 doi: 10.1136/bmj.l4046).
