About Mr Vikas Shankar

Personal Profile

After graduating in Medicine from India, Mr Shankar completed basic surgical training in Ophthalmology from Glasgow and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. This was followed by higher specialist training from Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. After gaining CCT, he completed a fellowship in Glaucoma Surgery from the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

He is trained to provide advanced glaucoma surgery, including augmented trabeculectomy, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and aqueous-shunt procedures (Baerveldt/Preserflo microshunt and Xen implant), and laser treatment in glaucoma. He has performed more than 500 augmented trabeculectomies, more than 100 aqueous shunt procedures, as well as micro incisional glaucoma surgery (Xen implants and Preserflo micro shunt). He specialises in complex anterior segment surgery, including complex cataract surgery.

He has gained recognition from the Royal College of Ophthalmology and currently runs a Glaucoma fellowship programme. He is also Service Lead for Glaucoma at the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, and provides a general ophthalmology service, including cataract surgery.

He has academic interests in open angle glaucoma and has published more than 10 research papers. His aim is to provide the highest standard of treatment in the most caring manner.
