About Vibhash Mishra

Personal Profile

Vibhash was appointed a consultant urological surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital, London in 2010 and has been the Clinical Lead for Lower Urinary Tract Services in the last few years. By virtue of his hard work, sincerity and endearing personality, he has earned the respect of his patients and colleagues and is known for his clinical astuteness and excellent communication.

His main interests are urinary incontinence and bladder dysfunction, but he also looks after patients with haematuria, bladder tumour, peno-scrotal problems, prostate disorders, urethral stricture, lower urinary tract (UTI) symptoms and recurrent UTI.

He is closely involved in education and research. He serves the UCL Medical School as an honorary associate professor and the Lead for undergraduate urology teaching. His eloquence and a generally helpful nature make him very popular among the students and he is consistently singled out as an exceptional teacher in their feedback to the University. He is also an enthusiastic clinical teacher and supervisor for foundation doctors and higher surgical trainees.

He has published papers in peer-reviewed journals, presented nationally and internationally, written book chapters and been the principal investigator for multi-centre research projects including HIVEC II on hyperthermia and Mitomycin C for superficial bladder cancers and UPSTREAM on utility of urodynamics in assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms.

In addition, there are a few projects lined up at different levels of execution which will, hopefully, add valuable information to the evidence base. The areas of research have included urinary incontinence, UTIs and prostatitis, not only because these conditions form a significant part of his clinical practice, but also, because he believes, not enough attention has been paid to these areas and consequently, there is a lack of robust evidence base. Cancer is an emotive topic, but the sufferings of patients with non-cancerous conditions are no less and medics have a duty of care to them too.

He qualified and obtained his Masters in General Surgery in India prior to completing a six-year rotation in urology in London including the last two years as a fellow in Female and Reconstructive Urology at the prestigious Institute of Urology at UCLH, London.

His diverse background and rich life experience have conferred upon him the unique ability to instantly relate to people. He believes the practice of medicine has to be a blend of art and science based on a scientific foundation and humane face.

Professionalism must not be allowed to overtake the personal touch and care must be provided with gentleness, sensitivity and respect. He considers his compassion, effective listening skills and affability as his assets. He is calm and unhurried and explains the pros and cons of any recommended treatment at length in a comprehensible language. Consequently, his patients find it easy to strike an instant rapport with him and leave the consultation knowing exactly how to contact him directly in case of any problems.

He lives in Watford with his obstetrician wife and two daughters and enjoys music, cinema and sports.
