About Venkat Reddy

Personal Profile

Dr Venkat Reddy is an accomplished physician with extensive experience in rheumatology, translational medicine, clinical research, and medical education. He is currently working as Translational Medicine Director at UCB, while also holding honorary academic and NHS consultant appointments as Honorary Associate Professor at UCL and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at the Royal Free Hospital. His career reflects a strong combination of specialist clinical expertise, academic leadership, and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for patients with complex inflammatory and autoimmune disease.

He trained in medicine with MBBS and MRCP qualifications before undertaking specialist training in rheumatology and general medicine through the London Deanery, which he completed in 2011. This broad foundation in internal medicine and rheumatology has provided him with the clinical depth required to assess and manage patients with multisystem inflammatory disease. His training has also given him a strong understanding of the importance of collaborative, multidisciplinary care in chronic rheumatological conditions.

Dr Reddy later completed a PhD at University College London, where his research focused on the response of patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis to B-cell targeted therapies, particularly Rituximab. He also investigated the potential of Obinutuzumab as a more effective treatment leading to approval for treatment of SLE and being investigated for treatment of other autoimmune diseases. Thus, informing the evolving use of biologic therapy in difficult-to-treat patients.

In his clinical work, Dr Reddy has extensive experience managing a wide spectrum of rheumatological and autoimmune disorders. These include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, Sjögren’s syndrome, polymyalgia rheumatica, myositis, gout, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, chronic fatigue, and soft tissue and musculoskeletal pain conditions. His specialist practice is informed by a holistic approach that considers not only disease activity and treatment response, but also sleep, stress, exercise, and nutrition as important contributors to long-term wellbeing.

As a clinician-academic, Dr Reddy has remained closely involved in teaching and training throughout his career. He has contributed to the supervision and development of junior doctors, trainees, and multidisciplinary colleagues, with a particular interest in education across the lifespan and in the interface between adolescent and adult rheumatology. His commitment to teaching has been recognised through academic roles and professional acknowledgement for educational excellence.

His current role at UCB reflects his growing leadership in translational medicine and drug development, where he contributes to the bridge between scientific discovery and patient-focused treatment innovation. Alongside this industry position, his honorary roles at UCL and the Royal Free Hospital ensure that he remains actively engaged in academic medicine and NHS clinical practice. This combination of industry, university, and hospital appointments gives him a uniquely broad perspective on the development and delivery of modern rheumatology care.

Overall, Dr Reddy’s profile is distinguished by specialist training, PhD-level research, substantial NHS consultant experience, academic teaching, and current leadership in translational medicine. His work continues to focus on improving the understanding and treatment of autoimmune disease, while supporting education, collaboration, and innovation across clinical practice and drug development.
