As part of her advanced training, Dr O’Colmain spent a year working at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London as a strabismus and paediatric ophthalmology fellow. Dr O’Colmain trains senior registrars, fellows and other consultants in adult strabismus (squint) medical and surgical skills. Dr O’Colmain also works with senior Highly Specialised Orthoptists as part of the investigation and management of patients with strabismus (squint).
Dr O’Colmain was previously the lead consultant for the paediatric ophthalmology service in NHS Tayside and also spent some years as lead consultant for Clinical Governance. She was, until recently, Chair of the Scottish Paediatric Ophthalmology Special Interest Group and the Scotland Representative to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists paediatric subcommittee.
Education is one of Dr O’Colmain’s particular interests and she is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Dundee Medical School. As part of her work within the NHS Dr O’Colmain maintains an active interest in research, Patient Safety and Quality of Care.
As lead consultant for the adult strabismus service in the East of Scotland, Dr O’Colmain looks after patients with all types of squints (strabismus), including complex squints, those with previous surgery, childhood squints and squints causing double vision. She undertakes surgery for all types of squint, including surgery with adjustable sutures. Dr O’Colmain is also skilled in medical management of squints with Botulinum toxin.
Facial dystonias, blepharospasm and apraxia of the eyelids (tics and spasms around the eyes and face, eye closing/opening difficulties) are a specialist area of practice for Dr O’Colmain and she is the lead consultant for the Botulinum Toxin treatment service at the Ophthalmology department at Ninewells Hospital.
Dr O’Colmain has a large and busy adult ophthalmology service in Tayside and enjoys seeing patients in the outpatient department and undertaking cataract surgery. She is a trainer for ophthalmology registrars of all levels including training in cataract surgery and strabismus surgery.
She is also experienced at the medical and surgical management of cysts and minor growths around the eye and eyelids. Dr O’Colmain cares for patients with dry and watery eyes and uses a holistic approach to these conditions working from lifestyle measures to multidisciplinary surgery when required.
