Dr Bowling qualified as a doctor in London in 1986. He has been a Consultant since 1996 (in Nottingham from 2003).

He has always worked in large University Teaching Hospitals, and has extensive experience in all areas of medical gastroenterology (except liver disease).This includes altered bowel habit, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, indigestion, acid reflux, anaemia, coeliac disease and conditions of malabsorption. He is also very experienced in diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, including cancer screening, having carried out over 30,000 procedures in his career.

Dr Bowling's sub-specialty interest is (under) nutrition. He is the senior consultant at the NHS regional referral unit for complex nutritional/intestinal failure (medical and surgical) at the Nottingham University Hospitals.

He is a respected national authority for intestinal failure, and a past President of the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN). He has published extensively, with over 200 publications in gastroenterology and nutrition.

He has and remains very active in national gastroenterology and nutrition-specific associations.
