Personal Profile

Mr Tim de Klerk is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and the Clinical Lead for Cataract Services at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, the second largest specialist eye hospital in the UK. He sub-specialises in cataract surgery and lens refractive surgery.

Mr de Klerk is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (London), a member of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons and on the Specialist Register with the GMC. He has numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and has presented his research work internationally at meetings in both the United States and Australia. He is personally responsible for the training of a number of trainee surgeons at any one time from both the UK and abroad.

As the Consultant Lead for Cataract Surgery at his NHS Trust, he is tasked with dealing with the most complex and challenging cataract cases, week in, week out.

Surgically, Mr de Klerk focuses specifically on cataract and refractive surgery. Privately, he offers a number of different lens options and for the procedure patients have the option of local anaesthetic, local anaesthetic with some relaxing sedation and general anaesthetic.

As a clinician he always provides personalised, honest, ethical advice based on the most up to date scientific knowledge available. When surgical treatment is indicated he always aims for perfection and does all that is possible to minimise the inherent risks involved. He considers himself fortunate to work in an area of medicine that can improve people's lives in such a direct and often dramatic way.
