About Dr Thomas Tidswell

Personal Profile

Dr Thomas Tidswell is a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist based in London with over 18 years of experience in the NHS. He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, where he combines expert clinical care with leadership and ongoing research.

Dr Tidswell qualified from Addenbrooke’s Medical School in 1992 after studying at Cambridge University. His early career included broad clinical training in adult and paediatric medicine, followed by a PhD at University College London focusing on neonatal brain function. He completed his specialist training in Clinical Neurophysiology at University College London Hospitals, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Since becoming a Consultant in 2005, Dr Tidswell has developed extensive expertise in investigating and diagnosing disorders of the peripheral nerves, muscles, and neuromuscular junctions. Using advanced neurophysiological techniques such as nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG), he assesses conditions ranging from common nerve compression syndromes like carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve entrapment to more complex neuropathies, myopathies, and neuromuscular junction disorders including myasthenia gravis.

His clinical practice involves tailoring investigations to individual patient symptoms to ensure accurate diagnosis and personalised management plans. Dr Tidswell regularly evaluates nerve injuries caused by trauma or inflammation, radiculopathies affecting the cervical and lumbar spine, and causes of muscle weakness and fatigue. This broad expertise enables him to provide comprehensive care for patients with both straightforward and complex neurological conditions.

As Head of Department, Dr Tidswell leads service development and multidisciplinary collaboration, working closely with neurologists, physiotherapists, and other specialists to deliver holistic patient care. Under his leadership, the department utilises state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and embraces innovative techniques to maintain the highest standards.

Dr Tidswell is also passionate about medical education and research. He mentors junior doctors and neurophysiology trainees, sharing his knowledge and fostering clinical excellence. His research interests focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and developing new approaches to managing neuromuscular disorders, contributing to advancements in the field.

Known for his thorough and empathetic approach, Dr Tidswell takes time to listen carefully and communicate clearly with patients, helping them understand complex medical information and make informed decisions about their care. His commitment to personalised, patient-centred care has earned him respect from both patients and colleagues.
