About Dr Tahir Akbar

Personal Profile

Dr Akbar is a consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, currently working at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation trust. He graduated in 2009 from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London medical school and did his Gastroenterology training the in the Wessex region.

Dr Akbar undertook a fellowship in intestinal failure and nutrition in Southampton. In 2018, he was awarded young Gastroenterologist of the year: emerging leader by the British Society of Gastroenterology. He was awarded a Masters of Science in Medical leadership by the Royal College of Physicians. 

Dr Akbar is independent in upper and lower GI endosocopy and small bowel capsule endoscopy. Dr Akbar’s special interest is seeing patients with malnutrition or who require supplemental and artificial nutrition, as well as seeing patient with general Gastroenterological issues, including Inflammatory bowel disease, Coeliac disease,  iron deficiency anaemia, abdominal pain, reflux, vomiting and irritable bowel syndrome.
