About Mr Suman Biswas

Personal Profile

Mr Biswas is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon based primarily at Queen’s Hospital, Burton-upon-Trent, since 2010. He is the lead for glaucoma services, introducing new glaucoma treatment procedures and improving service delivery by innovation.

Having graduated in 1989 from Jawaharlal Post-graduate Medical Institute, Pondicherry, India, he specialised in ophthalmology, obtaining Master of Surgery. He subsequently obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1993) and trained further in ophthamic surgery by completing a registrar rotation at Bristol Eye Hospital (2008). He also completed a 3 year research degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) after submitting a dissertation on the molecular biology and enzymology of cataract formation and ways of inhibiting/ retarding cataractogenesis at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston (2004).

He has a special interest in glaucoma, having completed Fellowship at Bristol Eye Hospital and Senior Glaucoma Fellowship at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre. He then undertook a visiting Fellowship at Vissum Mirasiera Eye institute, Madrid, Spain, to gain exposure to non-penetrating and angle implant glaucoma surgeries, before commencing work as consultant.

His emphasis is on quality care for his patients. Having performed more than 200 cataract surgeries and 100 glaucoma surgeries in the past year, his audited results demonstrate a success rate above the national average. He has also published in peer-reviewed journals, written a book chapter, presented widely in national and international meetings and is involved in training junior doctors as a College Tutor. He values good communication and patient satisfaction is his utmost priority.

Aside from work, he enjoys fine arts and is involved in a number of charitable activities.
